The controversy over donation funds at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya has now reached the Supreme Court. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed asking the court to order a detailed and independent investigation into alleged financial irregularities linked to the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust.
The petition has been filed by two lawyers, Ajay Kumar Rai and Dinesh Kumar Yadav. They have asked the Supreme Court to step in and ensure a fair investigation into how donation money collected for the temple has been managed and used.
The Ram Temple in Ayodhya is one of the most important religious places in India. Every year, lakhs of devotees visit the temple and make donations. Because of this, the trust handles a large amount of money. The petitioners say that any questions over the use of this money must be investigated properly to protect the faith of the people.
According to the PIL, there are serious allegations of misuse, missing funds and possible financial wrongdoing. The petitioners have said that these claims are serious enough to need a criminal investigation.
They have requested the court to direct the registration of an FIR so that the legal process can begin formally. An FIR, or First Information Report, is the first step in starting a criminal investigation in India.
The petition also asks for a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The lawyers argue that a CBI-led team would be more independent and experienced in handling financial and criminal cases.
They have also asked that the investigation be completed within a fixed time so that there are no unnecessary delays.
The PIL says the matter is not only about money but also about public trust. Since millions of devotees donate to the temple with faith and devotion, any doubts about the management of funds can hurt public confidence.
The petitioners have stressed that a transparent investigation is important to find out the truth and maintain trust in religious institutions.
At present, the Supreme Court has not yet passed any order on the matter. The court is expected to hear the petition and decide the next steps.
The case has already attracted public and political attention. The issue first became a major talking point earlier this month when opposition leaders raised questions over reports of missing donation funds.
Since then, the matter has grown into a bigger legal and political issue.
Why a CBI-led probe is being demanded
The petitioners have clearly said they are not satisfied with only an administrative-level inquiry. They argue that such a sensitive case needs trained investigators who understand financial crimes.
According to the PIL, the current allegations involve complex issues like fund collection, accounting and possible misuse of money. These require detailed examination of records, bank accounts and management decisions.
The petition says that a CBI-led SIT would inspire greater confidence among the public because the agency has experience in dealing with corruption and financial fraud cases.
The petitioners also pointed out that religious institutions must follow strong systems of transparency and accountability, especially when they receive huge public donations.
The plea further asks the court to strengthen audit and monitoring systems for the temple trust. This means there should be better checks in the future so that similar controversies do not happen again.

The case comes after the Uttar Pradesh government had already formed its own SIT on June 13 to look into the issue.
The state-appointed team includes Lucknow Divisional Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant, Inspector General of Police Kiran S and Finance Department Special Secretary Neel Ratan.
This team is currently investigating the allegations and has been asked to submit its report.
However, the petitioners say this state SIT may not be enough. They believe a CBI-led investigation would be more professional and independent.
The PIL says that the issue is larger than simple accounting mistakes. It involves the trust of crores of people who have emotional and spiritual connections with the Ram Temple.
Political reactions have also been strong. Opposition parties have demanded answers and questioned the management of the trust. On the other hand, the Uttar Pradesh government and temple authorities have defended the trust and said the truth will come out through the ongoing inquiry.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has already said that the trust itself had asked for an SIT investigation and that people should not jump to conclusions.
For now, all eyes are on the Supreme Court. Its decision on whether to allow a CBI-led probe could shape the future of this case.
The coming days will be important, as the court’s response may decide how the investigation moves forward and whether new legal action is taken.
