The weather in Himachal Pradesh has taken a sharp turn as continuous rain and snowfall have affected many parts of the state. The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy rain and snowfall in three districts—Mandi, Shimla, and Sirmaur—raising concerns among residents and authorities.
Over the past few days, higher areas of the state have received fresh snowfall, while plains and mid-hill regions have experienced steady rainfall. This has led to a noticeable drop in temperatures across the region, making weather conditions colder than usual for this time of year.
According to officials, the wet spell is likely to continue, with more rain and snowfall expected in the coming days. The current weather pattern is being influenced by a western disturbance, which is common during this season and often brings precipitation to northern parts of India.
Temperature drop and widespread precipitation
The ongoing rain and snowfall have caused a significant fall in temperatures across Himachal Pradesh. Several cities have recorded maximum temperatures well below normal levels.
In Shimla, the temperature dropped to around 12.6°C, which is nearly 5 degrees below the usual level. Sundernagar recorded 18.4°C, which is more than 8 degrees below normal. Una saw an even sharper drop, with temperatures around 17.6°C—over 12 degrees below average.
Other areas like Mandi, Bhuntar, and Manali also reported below-normal temperatures. This sudden dip has made weather conditions quite chilly, especially in higher regions where snowfall has been heavy.
The India Meteorological Department reported that light to moderate rain or snowfall was observed in most parts of the state over the past 24 hours. Some areas received heavy snowfall, especially in high-altitude regions.
Gondla recorded the highest snowfall of about 13 cm, followed by Keylong with 12 cm and Kukumseri with over 11 cm. Hansa and Kalpa also received snowfall, though in smaller amounts.
Rainfall was also recorded in several places. Manali saw the highest rainfall at 53 mm, followed by Tissa with 33 mm and Sarahan with over 32 mm. Other areas like Bhuntar, Saloni, and Dharamshala also received moderate rainfall.
This widespread precipitation has affected daily life in many areas. Roads in higher regions have become slippery due to snow, while rain has caused waterlogging in some towns.

Forecast and advisory for residents
The weather department has predicted that light to moderate rain or snowfall is very likely at most places in the state on March 20. In addition, one or two spells of heavy rain or snowfall may occur in isolated areas, especially in districts under the orange alert.
An orange alert means that people should be prepared for possible disruptions. Heavy rainfall or snowfall can lead to issues such as road blockages, landslides, and disruptions in transport services.
Authorities have advised residents, especially those living in hilly and remote areas, to remain cautious. Tourists visiting hill stations like Shimla and Manali are also being advised to check weather updates before planning travel.
A fresh and weak western disturbance is expected to affect northwest India from March 22. Due to this, light precipitation may continue in some parts of Himachal Pradesh between March 21 and 22, and again between March 24 and 25.
Farmers in the region are also keeping a close watch on the weather. While rain can be beneficial for some crops, excessive rainfall or hail can damage standing crops and affect agricultural activities.
The cold and wet weather has also increased the demand for heating and warm clothing. People are taking extra precautions to protect themselves from the cold, especially children and elderly individuals.
At the same time, the snowfall has brought a scenic beauty to the region, attracting tourists who enjoy winter landscapes. However, safety remains a priority, and local authorities are monitoring the situation closely.
In conclusion, Himachal Pradesh is currently experiencing a prolonged wet spell with rain and snowfall across many areas. The orange alert in key districts highlights the need for caution and preparedness.
As weather conditions remain unstable, residents and visitors are advised to stay updated with official forecasts and follow safety guidelines. While the precipitation has added to the natural beauty of the state, it also brings challenges that require careful handling in the coming days.
