Congress leader questions Centre’s record in Punjab

Raja Warring criticises PM Modi’s Punjab visit, says state needs action not promises

Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Friday strongly criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP-led central government, alleging that Punjab has not received the attention and support it deserves over the past several years. Responding to the Prime Minister’s recent visit to Punjab and Chandigarh, Warring claimed that the visit was politically motivated and linked to the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections rather than a sincere effort to address the state's long-standing issues.

The Congress leader said Punjab is facing several economic, agricultural and industrial challenges that require immediate attention. According to him, the people of the state are looking for concrete solutions and development initiatives rather than political speeches and election-related promises.

Warring argued that despite being in power at the Centre for more than a decade, the Narendra Modi government has failed to fulfil several commitments made to Punjab. He said the state has repeatedly sought support on issues related to agriculture, employment, industry and regional development, but many of these concerns remain unresolved.

His remarks came shortly after Prime Minister Modi inaugurated and launched development projects worth thousands of crores during his visit, highlighting the government's efforts to strengthen infrastructure, healthcare and education in the region.

However, Warring maintained that Punjab's deeper structural problems continue to remain unaddressed.

Congress questions Centre’s priorities

Speaking about the Prime Minister's visit, Warring alleged that the timing of the visit was closely linked to political calculations ahead of the next Assembly elections in Punjab.

According to him, the visit did not bring any major new announcements specifically targeted at solving the state's most pressing concerns.

The Congress leader argued that Punjab needs comprehensive economic revival measures, support for farmers and renewed industrial growth to create jobs and opportunities for young people.

He claimed that despite repeated demands from farmers and political parties, the Centre has not delivered on several important promises.

One of the major issues raised by Warring was the demand for a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops. Farmers' organisations have long sought legal protection to ensure that crops are purchased at guaranteed prices, arguing that it would provide financial security to agricultural communities.

Warring said many farmers continue to wait for clarity and action on this issue.

He also referred to demands related to farm loan waivers and measures aimed at reducing financial stress among farmers. According to him, the agricultural sector remains under pressure despite repeated assurances from the Centre.

Employment was another area highlighted by the Congress leader.

Warring argued that many young people in Punjab continue to face limited job opportunities and often seek employment outside the state or abroad. He said the government should focus on creating a stronger industrial base and attracting investment that generates sustainable employment.

In addition, he called for a special development package for Punjab's border districts, which face unique economic and security-related challenges due to their geographical location.

According to Warring, such measures are necessary to support growth and improve living conditions in these regions.

The Congress leader maintained that Punjab's concerns require long-term policy solutions rather than temporary political attention during election periods.

Allegations of discrimination

Warring also accused the BJP-led central government of treating Punjab unfairly since 2017.

He alleged that the state has not received the level of support it deserves from the Centre and questioned whether states need to have BJP governments in power to receive adequate assistance and development funds.

According to him, development and financial support should not be influenced by political considerations.

The Congress leader argued that every state has a right to receive fair treatment and access to central resources regardless of which political party governs it.

He described any approach that links development benefits to political alignment as inappropriate and harmful to the federal structure of the country.

Warring further claimed that Punjab has contributed significantly to India's growth and security over the decades and therefore deserves greater attention from policymakers.

The state has historically played a major role in agriculture, national food security and defence services. Because of these contributions, he said, Punjab's developmental concerns should be addressed through meaningful policy interventions.

The Congress leader also criticised what he described as attempts to polarise voters for electoral gains.

According to him, such strategies are unlikely to succeed in Punjab, where voters are more concerned about practical issues affecting their daily lives.

He said people in the state are looking for better infrastructure, employment opportunities, agricultural reforms and economic growth rather than political rhetoric.

Warring emphasised that citizens want measurable improvements in their quality of life and expect governments to deliver tangible results.

He argued that political speeches alone cannot solve challenges related to unemployment, declining industrial activity and agricultural distress.

The Congress leader reiterated that Punjab has made significant sacrifices for the nation throughout its history and has consistently contributed to India's progress.

Because of this, he said, the state deserves focused attention and concrete development initiatives rather than repeated promises that remain unfulfilled.

The remarks reflect the continuing political debate between the Congress and the BJP over development, governance and the Centre's relationship with opposition-ruled states.

While the BJP has highlighted recent infrastructure and public welfare projects as evidence of its commitment to Punjab's growth, opposition leaders argue that deeper economic and agricultural concerns still need urgent attention.

As political activity begins to intensify ahead of future elections, issues such as farmer welfare, employment generation, industrial development and Centre-state relations are expected to remain at the centre of public discussion in Punjab.

For now, Warring's criticism underscores the Congress party's position that Punjab requires sustained policy support and economic investment. Whether the Centre's recent development initiatives are enough to address these concerns will likely remain a subject of debate among political leaders and voters in the months ahead.
