Chandigarh day temperature falls, more rain expected Thursday

Chandigarh sees 5°C drop in day temperature, more rain likely on Thursday

On Wednesday, Chandigarh experienced cloudy skies and light rainfall, leading to a noticeable drop in temperature. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), only 2 mm of rain was recorded at the Sector 39 station, but it was enough to bring the maximum temperature down by five degrees. The drop in temperature was felt across the city, making the day much cooler and more pleasant than usual for this time of year.

The maximum temperature fell from 34.1°C on Tuesday to 29.1°C on Wednesday. This drop of 5°C brought the temperature 7.2 degrees below the normal average for late June. It was also the lowest maximum temperature recorded in the city this month. The minimum temperature, however, remained mostly steady. It was recorded at 27.2°C on Wednesday, only slightly lower than 27.4°C on Tuesday and still 0.6 degrees above normal.

People in Chandigarh, including many visitors at Sukhna Lake, were seen enjoying the pleasant weather and cool breeze that followed the light rainfall. The cloudy skies throughout the day added to the monsoon atmosphere, which had officially started in the city just a day earlier.

More rain expected soon

IMD officials said that the chances of rain are highest on Thursday. Though the rain might reduce on Friday and Saturday, a fresh western disturbance is expected to arrive in the region, which, along with the ongoing monsoon system, could bring more showers on Sunday.

Over the next three days, the weather is expected to stay relatively mild. The IMD forecast suggests that the maximum temperature will stay between 30°C and 33°C, while the minimum temperature will be between 26°C and 27°C. These temperatures are slightly below the typical highs seen during late June in this region.

Surender Paul, the IMD director, explained that the declaration of monsoon doesn’t always mean heavy rain immediately. He said the announcement is based on the larger regional weather system rather than just local rainfall. Even though the monsoon was officially declared in Chandigarh on Tuesday—two days earlier than the usual date—the city hasn’t yet received significant rainfall.

So far, only 38.1 mm of rain has been recorded in the city for the month. This amount is much lower than normal. In fact, it is 69.3% below the average rainfall usually seen by this time in June. Despite this, weather experts remain hopeful that heavier showers will come later in the week, especially with the expected arrival of the western disturbance.

Humidity levels in the city remained high throughout Wednesday, staying above 80%. This level of humidity is typical during the monsoon season and indicates that moisture levels in the air are rising. While the city waits for heavier rainfall, the current weather conditions have still brought some relief from the earlier heat.

In conclusion, Chandigarh has seen an early start to the monsoon season with cooler temperatures and cloudy skies, but rainfall so far has been limited. More showers are expected in the coming days, especially around Sunday, which could bring the much-needed rain to reduce the rainfall deficit. Until then, residents can enjoy the cooler weather and the calm atmosphere brought on by cloudy skies and gentle winds.
