Chandigarh jail escapee captured: inmate nabbed after Police pursuit

Escaped jail inmate apprehended after fleeing police custody at Chandigarh's GMCH

A prisoner who had managed to escape from police custody at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Chandigarh has been apprehended a day after the incident. Gagandeep Singh, a resident of Ambala’s Jatwar village and an inmate of Ambala Central Jail, was arrested near Shambhu village in Patiala district by the CIA staff of Shahzadpur police.

Escape and arrest: A swift pursuit by Police

Gagandeep Singh had been brought to GMCH in Chandigarh for medical treatment. He had allegedly ingested glass pieces while in jail, where he was held in connection with a case involving causing harm and damage to public property since November 18. During his visit to GMCH, he managed to escape from Haryana Police custody by pushing officers and jumping from the first floor, despite being handcuffed.

The CIA staff of Shahzadpur police, acting swiftly, located and arrested Gagandeep Singh near Shambhu. He has been admitted to the district civil hospital for necessary medical treatment.

Inmate's previous incidents of misconduct

Gagandeep Singh's escape highlighted the challenges faced by law enforcement in managing inmates with a history of misconduct. The prisoner's actions, including the ingestion of glass pieces and the subsequent escape, have prompted authorities to reassess security protocols in handling such cases. The incident underscores the need for enhanced security measures when transporting inmates for medical treatment to prevent such escapes and ensure the safety of both law enforcement and the public.
