Chandigarh MC to treat cowshed wastewater for environmental sustainability

Chandigarh Municipal Corporation to implement wastewater treatment for city cowsheds

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has initiated the installation of Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP) at two gaushalas, namely Sector-45 and Sector-25, as part of an environmental initiative. The project aims to treat wastewater generated from these cowsheds, enhancing its quality by eliminating harmful substances.

Chandigarh's Mayor, Anup Gupta, kickstarted the installation of ETPs, marking a significant step toward eco-friendly wastewater management. The project involves setting up a 40 Kilo Litre Per Day (KLD) capacity ETP at Sector-45 gaushala and a 20 KLD capacity ETP at Sector-25 gaushala. Mayor Gupta highlighted the importance of treating liquid excreta from animals to meet acceptable standards before discharge into the estate sewerage system. The ETPs, with a completion timeline of two months, come with a total cost of ₹101.93 lakh for Sector-25 and ₹151.93 lakh for Sector-45.

Mayor Gupta emphasized the necessity of waste treatment to prevent environmental harm and maintain the city's hygiene and sanitation standards. The initiative aligns with Chandigarh's commitment to sustainable practices, ensuring a positive impact on the environment and overall public well-being.
