BJP decides solo run in Punjab Elections amid alliance setback

BJP to contest independently in Punjab after failed alliance negotiations

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to contest all 13 seats in Punjab on its own, marking the end of speculation regarding a potential alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). This move sets the stage for a four-cornered electoral battle in the state.

Failed alliance talks with SAD

Efforts to form an alliance between the BJP and SAD fell through due to disagreements over certain key demands of the latter. Despite last-minute negotiations, the parties couldn't reconcile differences, notably regarding the treatment of Sikh prisoners and other issues.

State BJP chief Sunil Jakhar emphasized that the decision to contest independently was made after consulting with local leaders and grassroots workers, prioritizing the future of Punjab, especially the welfare of its youth and farmers. Jakhar affirmed that the BJP would not form any alliances in Punjab.

The SAD exited the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in 2020 following the approval of three contentious farm bills by the Parliament. These bills led to widespread protests by farmers, and SAD considered them detrimental to farmers' interests.

Demands and disagreements

SAD's demands included withdrawal of cases against farmers involved in protests, assurances on minimum support prices for various crops, and release of Sikh prisoners, among others. The parties failed to reach a consensus, leading to the breakdown of talks.

The BJP, which contested only three seats in Punjab in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, sought a greater share of seats than what SAD was willing to offer. Additionally, SAD's demand for opening the Wagah border for trade further complicated negotiations.

The decision for independent contestation by BJP comes as the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress also opt to contest separately in Punjab, despite being part of the Opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance in neighboring Haryana, Delhi, and Gujarat.
