Uttarakhand student shoots teacher two days after being slapped
Class 9 student opens fire on teacher in Uttarakhand school after earlier slap incident
In Rudrapur, Uttarakhand, a shocking incident took place inside a school classroom when a Class 9 student shot his physics teacher with a country-made pistol. The attack happened just two days after the teacher allegedly slapped the student during a lesson. Police said the boy was upset and wanted revenge, which led him to carry out the shooting. The incident has raised serious concerns about student behavior, discipline in schools, and the easy access to illegal firearms.
According to the police, the student was slapped by his physics teacher on Monday. The boy claimed that he had correctly answered a question in class, yet the teacher slapped him, which left him angry and humiliated in front of other students. Instead of letting the matter go, the boy decided to retaliate. On Wednesday, he brought a country-made pistol hidden inside his school bag and waited for the right moment.
Soon after the class ended, the boy pulled out the weapon and fired at the teacher. The bullet struck the teacher on his shoulder, causing panic inside the classroom. Other students were left terrified as chaos spread across the school. The injured teacher was quickly taken by school staff to a private hospital. Doctors confirmed that he was out of danger and receiving treatment.
Police action and investigation
Police arrived at the school soon after the incident. The student was detained and questioned by senior officers, including additional superintendent of police (Kashipur) Abay Pratap Singh. The officer said the boy admitted to planning the attack as revenge for the slap. He told police that he was insulted even after giving the correct answer in class and could not tolerate the humiliation. This statement shocked the authorities, who said such extreme action over a small dispute shows how dangerous easy access to weapons can be.
The police have seized CCTV footage from the school that clearly shows the student firing at the teacher. Based on a written complaint from the injured teacher, a case was filed against the minor under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for attempt to murder. The student has been kept in custody and will be presented before the Juvenile Justice Board on Thursday.
Investigators are now focusing on how the boy managed to get a country-made pistol. Police officials believe that someone in the local area might have supplied the illegal weapon, and they are trying to trace the source. They said strict action will be taken against whoever gave the weapon to the teenager.
A larger concern for schools
The shocking incident has left teachers, parents, and education authorities deeply worried. A student carrying a weapon into a classroom shows a serious breakdown in both discipline and security. Experts say that incidents of students reacting violently to teachers’ actions must be addressed urgently. They also highlight the need for better counseling and emotional support systems in schools.
The case has also sparked debate over corporal punishment in classrooms. While slapping or scolding students was once seen as common practice, laws today discourage physical punishment. Many believe that the teacher’s action, even if minor, might have triggered a chain of anger in the boy. However, others argue that no reason can justify bringing a gun to school and attacking a teacher.

Local residents of Rudrapur expressed shock at the news, calling it one of the most disturbing incidents in recent times. Parents are now worried about the safety of their children in schools and are asking authorities to increase monitoring and security measures.
For now, the teacher is recovering in hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. The Class 9 student remains in police custody, with his future to be decided by the juvenile justice system. The incident stands as a warning about the rising influence of violence on young minds and the urgent need for stronger preventive measures in schools and communities.
