Uttar Pradesh authorities have taken strong action against the illegal trade of codeine-based cough syrup. On December 10, 2025, the state government announced that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to investigate the case had identified 12 main conspirators. This crackdown highlights the government’s strict stance on drug abuse and its commitment to ensuring public safety.

The Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) investigation revealed that these individuals were involved in the manufacture, distribution, and sale of codeine-laced cough syrup, which is highly addictive and can pose serious health risks. The identified suspects are:

Enforcement actions and government response

Following the SIT investigation, the Uttar Pradesh government has taken extensive measures to control the illegal codeine syrup trade. Over 128 FIRs have been filed against individuals and establishments linked to the distribution and sale of the toxic cough syrup. Authorities are also carrying out ongoing raids and operations to arrest all accused conspirators.

The SIT, headed by Inspector General of Police (Law & Order) LR Kumar, is closely monitoring the investigation to ensure no loopholes in the process. Their role is crucial in identifying networks involved in the illegal distribution and taking appropriate legal action against them.

CM Yogi Adityanath has sent a strong warning to those engaged in such activities. He declared that the government will take strict action against everyone involved in the codeine syrup trade. The aim is to dismantle the syndicate completely and ensure the safety of public health in the state.

Officials also emphasized the importance of vigilance in pharmacies, medical stores, and distributors, noting that even small-scale illegal operations can lead to serious addiction problems among the public. The government is working to educate citizens about the dangers of consuming codeine-containing cough syrup without prescription.

The crackdown demonstrates a proactive approach by the UP government to prevent drug abuse and maintain law and order. By identifying key conspirators early, filing FIRs, and running continuous raids, the authorities hope to eradicate illegal drug syndicates and protect public safety.

The investigation and enforcement actions in Uttar Pradesh serve as a warning to other states as well, showing that authorities are serious about taking down networks involved in illegal drugs. CM Yogi Adityanath has urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement and report suspicious activities to help the government maintain a drug-free environment.

With the SIT continuing its investigation and the state administration actively pursuing offenders, Uttar Pradesh is sending a clear message that drug-related crimes will not be tolerated. The efforts also aim to ensure that public health is safeguarded and that individuals engaged in illegal practices face strict legal consequences.
