Heavy rain and snowfall in Himachal Pradesh decreases temperature

Himachal Pradesh experienced extreme weather conditions on Monday, with heavy rain, snow, thunderstorms, hail, and gusty winds sweeping across various parts of the state. Keylong, the administrative headquarters of Lahaul and Spiti district, witnessed substantial snowfall during the day.

IMD issues red alert for heavy rain and snow

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh due to the anticipated heavy rainfall and snowfall. This warning indicates the potential for severe weather conditions and advises residents and authorities to take necessary precautions.

Several regions in Himachal Pradesh recorded significant rainfall and snowfall. Notable figures include Bharmaur receiving 11mm of rain, followed by 9mm in Manali, 5mm in Dalhousie, and 4.5mm in Chamba. In terms of snowfall, Kukumseri in Lahaul-Spiti district experienced 50.6cm, with Keylong receiving 21cm, Hansa 10cm, and Kalpa 1.6cm.

The extreme weather conditions led to a considerable drop in maximum temperatures across the state. The lowest minimum temperature was recorded at Kukumseri, plummeting to -0.5 degrees Celsius.

IMD's warning and outlook

The IMD issued an orange warning for hail, gusty winds of 40-50kmph, thunderstorms, and lightning at isolated places for February 20. Additionally, a yellow alert was issued for thunderstorms with lightning at isolated places for February 21. These warnings highlight the ongoing threat of adverse weather conditions and the need for vigilance.
