180 days maternity leave granted to Education Department cooks and helpers by Sukhu

Sukhu announces 180 days maternity leave for Education Department cooks and helpers

The Himachal Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has made a significant decision to provide 180 days of maternity leave to approximately 17,889 female cook cum helpers employed in the education department. This move comes under the Maternity Benefit Act of 1961 and marks a positive step towards supporting women in the workforce. Previously, these workers did not have access to maternity leave, but now, with the issuance of necessary directives, they will be entitled to this benefit.

Maternity leave for education department workers

This decision addresses a long-standing demand from mid-day meal workers and reflects the government's commitment to the welfare of vulnerable sections of society. By granting maternity leave, the government aims to alleviate the challenges faced by female workers during pregnancy and childbirth.

This initiative aligns with the broader goal of fostering an environment where women can balance work and family responsibilities without undue hardship.

Restoration of pension scheme

Additionally, the government took another significant step by reinstating the old pension scheme for government employees in its very first Cabinet meeting. This decision, benefiting over 1.36 lakh individuals, is aimed at securing the future of retirees, allowing them to lead a dignified life with their families post-retirement. Sukhu highlighted that this decision was not driven by political motives but rather by a genuine concern for the well-being of retirees.
