Punjab resident tests positive for Covid at GMCH-32, Chandigarh
A 40-year-old man from Punjab has tested positive for Covid-19 at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh. He was found to have the JN.1 variant of the virus. This is the first Covid case reported at a health facility in the city in recent times.
After his test came back positive, the hospital immediately moved him into isolation. He is now being treated in a special Covid area set up within the hospital. Two ventilators have been arranged in that area to provide emergency support, if needed.
Dr Ashok Atri, the director of GMCH-32, confirmed the news. He said, “The data has been entered in the required format. The patient has been isolated in the Covid area, and two ventilators have been set up there.” He also reassured the public by adding, “There is no need to worry as of now.”
Strict measures in place
The hospital is taking all safety steps to make sure that the virus does not spread. Health officials and doctors are keeping a close watch on the patient. So far, his condition is stable. He is receiving regular care and checkups.
Officials have also started tracking the people who came into contact with him recently. These people will be tested and monitored for symptoms. If needed, they will be advised to isolate themselves to avoid further spread of the virus.
Though this is only one case, the health department is not taking any chances. They are following all Covid protocols that were used during earlier waves. This includes testing, isolation, and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) by hospital staff.
The JN.1 variant, found in the patient, is a subvariant of the Omicron strain of coronavirus. Experts say that while it spreads easily, it usually causes mild symptoms in most people. However, it can be risky for older adults and people with weak immune systems.
Awareness and precautions
Doctors have asked the public not to panic but to stay alert. They suggest people continue basic precautions such as wearing masks in crowded areas, washing hands regularly, and staying home if they feel unwell. These simple steps can help stop the spread of the virus.
In recent months, Covid cases across India had come down sharply. Most people had stopped wearing masks or taking precautions. This new case is a reminder that the virus is still around and can appear again at any time.
The Chandigarh Health Department is also on alert. Officials are expected to issue guidelines if more cases come up. They may also ask hospitals to review their Covid readiness plans, such as checking oxygen supplies, ICU availability, and protective gear for health workers.
The government has said that the situation is under control and there is no need for fear. However, they may increase random testing and surveillance in the coming days to detect any hidden spread of the virus.

Response from local residents
Some people in Chandigarh said that the news was concerning, especially because the patient is from a nearby state. “We thought Covid was gone,” said a local shopkeeper. “But now we hear there is a case again, and that too in a hospital.”
Parents of schoolchildren said they hoped authorities would be careful. “We don’t want schools to shut down again, but the health of kids is more important,” said a mother waiting outside a school in Sector 32.
Others suggested bringing back mask mandates in hospitals and public transport, at least for some time. “We cannot afford to ignore this. Even if it's one case, we should be prepared,” said a senior citizen who was waiting at a clinic nearby.
About the hospital
GMCH-32 is one of the largest government hospitals in Chandigarh. It played a big role during earlier Covid waves by treating hundreds of patients. The hospital has a good number of ICU beds, ventilators, and trained staff.
According to hospital sources, they had already kept a small Covid ward ready, just in case. After the decline in cases, this ward was not being used actively, but the infrastructure was maintained. This preparation helped them quickly move the patient into isolation.
Dr Atri said that the hospital staff had been briefed to remain cautious and to follow all safety rules while treating the patient. He said that similar readiness was expected from other hospitals too.
Covid situation in nearby regions
Covid-19 cases in Punjab and Haryana have remained low for the past several months. However, isolated cases like this can still occur. Experts say that while the overall threat has reduced, the virus continues to evolve and can still cause infections.
Health experts also point out that vaccination has helped reduce the severity of the disease. Most people have either received two vaccine doses or had a natural infection, which gives them some level of protection. However, they say booster doses can still help in high-risk cases, especially for the elderly.
The central health ministry has also asked states to keep monitoring Covid trends and send regular reports. They are keeping track of new variants that may enter India or emerge here.
Medical experts have urged people not to panic. “One case should not worry the public too much,” said a senior doctor at PGIMER, Chandigarh. “But it is a reminder to not let our guard down completely. We must remain cautious.”
He added that Covid is now more manageable thanks to better treatments and vaccinations. “If people report symptoms early and follow medical advice, recovery is much faster now,” he said.
Meanwhile, people are being advised to keep track of their health. If anyone develops fever, cough, sore throat, or loss of taste or smell, they should see a doctor and get tested.
What to expect ahead
If more cases are found in the coming days, health authorities may bring back certain safety rules. This could include mask advisories in closed spaces, checking patients at hospitals, and encouraging people to get booster doses.
Schools, offices, and public places may also be asked to follow cleanliness and hygiene practices again. However, lockdowns or major restrictions are not likely unless there is a large spike in cases.
The Chandigarh administration is likely to hold meetings with health officials soon to review the situation. They may ask all hospitals to stay alert and report any suspicious symptoms among patients.
So far, the patient at GMCH-32 is doing well and responding to treatment. Doctors say that he may be discharged once he tests negative and has no symptoms.
This case serves as a warning that Covid has not disappeared and can return at any time. It reminds everyone to stay responsible, avoid carelessness, and follow health advice for their own safety and that of others.
