Harbhajan Singh's birthday recall: prank gone wrong on Sri Lanka tour
Harbhajan Singh turns a year older: Revisiting his unforgettable prank gone wrong in Sri Lanka
Harbhajan Singh, the famous Indian cricketer, turned 45 on July 3, 2025. He is one of India’s greatest off-spinners and played a key role in many of India’s big wins. On his birthday, cricket fans are remembering his achievements and also one of the funniest moments from his career.
In a light-hearted interview on the show Bluntly Streaming, Harbhajan shared a funny incident that happened during one of India’s cricket tours to Sri Lanka. He was not alone in the mischief. His close friend and teammate, Yuvraj Singh, was also part of the prank.
Harbhajan recalled how they planned a fun activity during their stay in Colombo. They decided to scare their teammates by wearing scary masks and knocking on their hotel room doors. The idea was to surprise and make them laugh afterward. They were sure they would pull it off smoothly because they had the room numbers of all their teammates.
He said, “We were in Colombo once and we had bought masks to scare people. So me and Yuvi, after wearing the masks, were knocking on people’s doors in hopes of scaring them. We were only knocking on the rooms of our teammates because we had the list of the rooms.”
But things didn’t go as planned.
One night, wearing their masks, Harbhajan and Yuvraj knocked on a door, thinking it belonged to one of their teammates. But when the door opened, they found themselves face-to-face with a stranger. The person was not part of the team. The sight was so unexpected that everyone—Harbhajan, Yuvraj, and the unknown man—got scared. It turned into an awkward moment.
Harbhajan recalled with a laugh, “We went on to knock on a door, and an unknown individual opened the gate. Upon seeing the sight, we, alongside the individual, got scared. We eventually made a run for it and settled in our room.”
The prank backfired, but the memory still brings a smile to Harbhajan’s face, and now, to all his fans too.

While Harbhajan Singh may be remembered for his funny pranks off the field, his career on the field was no joke. He was one of the most skilled and aggressive spinners India has ever had. His performances in the 2000s helped India win many matches at home and abroad.
