Prayagraj, one of the major cities of Uttar Pradesh, is set to get a modern, super-specialty hospital with facilities similar to those found at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). This announcement was made by Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak during his visit to the city on Friday, June 27, 2025.
Addressing the media at the District Panchayat auditorium after a mock parliament event held in memory of the 1975 Emergency, Pathak confirmed that even though Prayagraj will not receive an AIIMS, a hospital with the same level of advanced facilities will be constructed soon. This is expected to significantly boost medical infrastructure and healthcare services in the city and surrounding areas.
New hospital project in Naini
Pathak explained that the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been made the nodal agency for this ambitious project. The new hospital will be developed in Naini, an area in the southern part of Prayagraj, and will be a state-of-the-art super-specialty medical facility.
This decision comes as a relief for the people of the region, who were previously expecting an AIIMS to be built in Prayagraj but were later informed that this would not be possible. The new hospital aims to provide the same quality of healthcare and medical treatment that AIIMS hospitals are known for. According to Pathak, the hospital will serve as a major centre for specialised treatments, diagnostics, surgeries, and emergency care.
The Deputy CM said that the plan is to build a fully equipped hospital with the latest medical technology and infrastructure. The facility will have departments for cardiology, neurology, oncology, nephrology, trauma care, and other super-specialties. It is also expected to include advanced operation theatres, intensive care units (ICUs), and emergency response systems.
Pathak assured that the state government is fully committed to completing the project efficiently. He said that the project will help reduce the need for people to travel to cities like Lucknow or Delhi for high-level medical treatment.
In addition to the new hospital, the state government is also focusing on improving existing healthcare services in the city. Brajesh Pathak shared that superspecialist doctors will soon be appointed at two important government hospitals in Prayagraj — Tej Bahadur Sapru Hospital (also known as Beli Hospital) and Motilal Nehru Divisional Hospital (commonly known as Colvin Hospital).
Boost in healthcare and recruitment
One of the key points raised by Pathak during his address was the large-scale recruitment drive planned for the healthcare sector in Uttar Pradesh. He said the state government is working to fill 2,100 vacant posts in the health department through a public recruitment process. Out of these, 532 doctors will soon be posted in various government hospitals, including those in Prayagraj.
This recruitment drive aims to solve the issue of doctor shortages in government hospitals and improve the quality of medical services. With more specialists and doctors in place, the burden on existing healthcare staff will be reduced, and patients will receive faster and better treatment.
Since 2017, the UP government has taken several steps to improve health infrastructure and law and order in the state. Pathak claimed that Uttar Pradesh is now a leader in the ‘One District, One Product’ (ODOP) scheme, which promotes local industries and employment generation. He highlighted that healthcare, law enforcement, and industry have all seen positive developments under the present administration.

Pathak also used the platform to recall the Emergency of 1975, imposed by the then Congress government. He accused the Congress of abusing power, saying the Emergency was a "black chapter" in Indian democracy. He claimed that during that time, the press was silenced, individual freedoms were taken away, and opposition voices were crushed. He said, "India will never forget the injustices of the Emergency," and added that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will continue to expose how the Constitution was strangled by Congress.
Criticising opposition parties, Pathak described both Congress and the Samajwadi Party as “personality-driven outfits” that serve the interests of a few leaders rather than the people. He said their leadership styles were outdated and not fit for modern governance.
Pathak also addressed several local issues raised by the media. When asked about the controversy surrounding Dr Rashmi Verma, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Gonda, he stated that action would be taken once the government reviewed the relevant documents. On another issue involving religious speakers in Etawah, he said that the situation has become a serious concern and posed a challenge for the Samajwadi Party.
In summary, Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak’s visit to Prayagraj brought significant updates about the future of healthcare in the city. The announcement of a modern hospital with AIIMS-like facilities has given new hope to residents who had been waiting for a major medical centre. The ongoing recruitment of doctors and improvement in existing hospitals also reflects the government’s commitment to improving public health services.
With plans for a super-specialty hospital in Naini, along with improvements to Beli and Colvin hospitals, Prayagraj is expected to become a strong medical hub in the region. The government believes this development will not only benefit the local population but also attract patients from nearby districts and even other states.
As the city continues to grow, the need for better medical care becomes even more urgent. This hospital project, combined with active recruitment and infrastructure development, is seen as a big step forward. However, its success will depend on how effectively the plans are implemented and whether the promises made today turn into real change for the people of Prayagraj.
