Pakistan FM radio stations stop playing Indian songs amid rising tensions with India

In response to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following the tragic Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, where 26 individuals, predominantly tourists, lost their lives, Pakistani FM radio stations have ceased airing Indian songs. This decision, announced by the Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA), reflects the nation's current sentiment and solidarity.

PBA's decision and governmental support

The PBA's move to halt the broadcasting of Indian music across Pakistani FM stations was confirmed by Secretary General Shakeel Masood. This action has been lauded by Pakistan's Information Minister, Atta Tarar, who described it as a "patriotic gesture" that aligns with the collective sentiment of the nation during these challenging times .

Broader implications and bilateral measures

The cessation of Indian songs on Pakistani airwaves is one among several measures taken by both nations in the wake of the Pahalgam incident. India has responded by suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, expelling Pakistani military attachés, and closing the Attari land-transit post. Additionally, India has revoked visas issued to Pakistani nationals and closed its airspace to Pakistani airlines. In retaliation, Pakistan has closed its airspace to Indian airlines and suspended trade with India, including through third countries . 

These developments underscore the heightened state of affairs between the two countries, with cultural exchanges like music becoming collateral in the broader geopolitical tensions.
