OpenAI Appoints Pragya Misra as the head of government relations in India

OpenAI, a technology company, has hired Pragya Misra to lead government relations in India. This decision comes at a crucial time during India's elections, which will shape AI regulations.

Role of Pragya Misra

Misra, aged 39, will oversee public policy and partnerships for OpenAI in India. She brings experience from her previous roles at Truecaller AB and Meta Platforms Inc. Her duties are expected to begin by the end of this month.

This move reflects OpenAI's commitment to working with governments worldwide as they consider AI regulations. India, with its large population and growing economy, offers significant opportunities for tech companies, but also challenges due to evolving regulations.

Competition in the Indian market

OpenAI faces competition from tech giants like Google, who are tailoring AI models for India. Google aims to address linguistic diversity by supporting over 100 local languages, expanding internet access beyond English-speaking urban areas.

During a previous visit to India, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized the importance of governments supporting AI research for public services like healthcare. He also met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss India's use of OpenAI's AI service, ChatGPT.

Altman supports regulations for AI but believes they may not be immediately necessary. He thinks they could become essential in the future as AI technology evolves.
