New QR tickets allow Lucknow Metro passengers to book rides digitally
Lucknow Metro launches QR-based ticketing system to make travel faster and easier
The Lucknow Metro has taken a major step towards smart and digital travel by launching a new QR-based ticketing system. The facility was formally introduced on February 16, 2026, at Hazratganj Metro Station. With this new system, passengers can now book metro tickets digitally or get QR-based paper tickets, making travel more convenient and time-saving.
The launch event was led by Sushil Kumar, Managing Director of the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation. Officials said the new system is designed to reduce queues, improve passenger flow, and support the broader goals of smart urban mobility and Digital India.
The QR-based ticketing system allows commuters to book tickets from anywhere and use them easily at metro stations. It also supports UPI payments and upgraded machines, making the overall travel experience smoother for daily users as well as occasional passengers.
How the new QR ticketing system works
Under the new system, passengers have multiple options to get QR-based tickets. The easiest method is through the official mobile application called Lucknow Metro Official, which is available on both Android and iOS platforms. After downloading the app, commuters can select their journey, make payment, and receive a digital QR ticket directly on their smartphone.
For passengers who prefer buying tickets at stations, QR tickets are also available at ticket counters and through upgraded Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs). When purchased digitally through the app, the ticket remains on the phone in QR format. When purchased at counters or TVMs, commuters receive a printed paper ticket with a QR code.
To enter or exit the metro station, passengers simply need to scan the QR code at the Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates that are marked with yellow strips. Once scanned, the gate opens automatically, allowing smooth entry or exit. This removes the need for physical tokens and speeds up passenger movement, especially during peak hours.
The metro administration has clarified that traditional token-based tickets will continue to be available for now. This ensures that passengers who are not comfortable with digital systems can still travel without difficulty. The idea is to offer flexibility and gradually encourage more people to shift towards digital ticketing.

Upgraded machines and push for digital travel
To support the new QR ticketing system, Lucknow Metro has installed advanced QR-enabled Ticket Vending Machines across all metro stations. According to officials, every station now has at least one QR-compatible TVM and one QR-supported ticket counter. This ensures that commuters across the network can easily access the new service.
These upgraded TVMs also support UPI-based payments, allowing passengers to pay using popular digital platforms. This move is expected to reduce the use of cash, shorten queues at counters, and improve overall efficiency at stations.
Speaking at the launch, Sushil Kumar said that the QR-based ticketing system marks an important milestone for Lucknow Metro. He explained that the initiative is based on the idea of “Smart Travel,” where passengers can plan and book their journeys with ease. According to him, the system allows people to book tickets from anywhere and enjoy a faster and simpler travel experience.
He also linked the initiative to the larger vision of Digital India. He said digital platforms are helping bring public services closer to citizens and making daily travel more convenient. With QR tickets and UPI payments, metro travel in Lucknow is moving closer to global standards of smart transport.
Looking ahead, Lucknow Metro has also announced plans to introduce the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) in the next phase. This facility, already in use in cities like Kanpur and Agra, follows the “One Nation, One Card” vision. Once introduced, NCMC will allow passengers to use a single card for travel across different metro systems and other transport services where the facility is available.
The launch of QR-based ticketing is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters. It will reduce waiting time, improve passenger convenience, and make metro travel more efficient. Officials believe the new system will also encourage more people to use public transport, helping reduce traffic congestion and pollution in the city.
With this step, Lucknow Metro has joined other modern metro systems in India that are adopting digital solutions for better passenger services. As the city grows, such smart initiatives are expected to play a key role in building a more connected, efficient, and commuter-friendly urban transport network.
