PM Narendra Modi launches Aravalli Green Wall Project

On World Environment Day (June 5, 2025), Prime Minister Narendra Modi started the Aravalli Green Wall Project by planting a banyan sapling at Bhagwan Mahavir Vanasthali Park in Delhi. This event symbolically marked the beginning of efforts to reforest the Aravalli mountain range, one of the world’s oldest mountain systems.

The Aravalli range, which spans Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Delhi, has been under severe environmental stress for many years. PM Modi emphasized that the government is committed to tackling various environmental problems in this region. These include improving water systems, preventing dust storms, and stopping the eastward spread of the Thar Desert.

Use of technology and native trees

PM Modi stated that plantation activities will now be geo-tagged and tracked on the Meri LiFE portal. He mentioned that in urban and semi-urban areas where land is limited, modern planting techniques will be used along with traditional methods.

The Green Wall project will also focus on removing invasive species like prosopis juliflora and planting native trees such as khair, ronjh, dhau, pilkhan, and salai. These species are more suitable to the local ecosystem and will help restore the natural balance of the Aravalli landscape.

The project is not just about trees—it is about reviving the health of the entire region. Local governments will be involved in the restoration process, working alongside the central government.

PM Modi also mentioned the #EkPedMaaKeNaam campaign, which aims to connect people emotionally to tree plantation by planting trees in their mother's name. He said the new plantation drive under the Aravalli Green Wall project also supports this initiative.
