Kailash Manasarovar yatra to resume in June: here's how to register

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra will finally restart this year after a long gap of five years. The famous spiritual journey was stopped in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and rising tensions between India and China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

The ministry shared that the yatra will be held between June and August 2025. Many people from different religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon undertake this pilgrimage. They travel to the holy Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar, which are located at a high altitude of nearly 15,000 feet.

The Kailash Manasarovar Yatra is considered extremely sacred and is important for spiritual reasons. It is believed to bring blessings, inner peace, and fulfillment to those who complete it.

This year, five groups (batches) of 50 pilgrims each will travel via Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand, while ten groups of 50 pilgrims each will travel through Nathu La Pass in Sikkim.

Pilgrims who are interested can now apply online. The MEA has opened the official website for applications at kmy.gov.in. The selection of pilgrims will be done through a fair, computer-based system. The process will also ensure gender balance, giving equal chances to men and women.

The ministry made it clear that the computer system will randomly pick pilgrims without human interference. This is to make sure that the selection remains transparent and fair to all.

The COVID-19 pandemic had forced many countries, including India, to put travel restrictions in place, and as a result, the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra was stopped. Later, the border issues between India and China delayed the restart of the yatra even further.

Now, with conditions improving, the Indian government has decided to reopen the spiritual route with safety measures in place.

The MEA’s announcement on Saturday officially confirmed that the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra 2025 is back on track.

The ministry’s statement said:

“Kailash Manasarovar Yatra organised by the Ministry of External Affairs is set to take place from June to August 2025. This year, 5 batches, each consisting of 50 Yatris, and 10 batches, each consisting of 50 Yatris, are scheduled to travel through Uttarakhand State crossing over at Lipulekh Pass, and through Sikkim State crossing over at Nathu La Pass, respectively.”

They added that the application portal is open, and interested pilgrims can apply online easily.

The ministry also explained that since 2015, the entire application process for the yatra has been fully computerised. From applying online to the final selection, everything is done through the digital system.

Because of this, applicants do not need to send any letters, faxes, or make special calls to check the status of their application. All information and updates are available through the official website itself.

For any questions, suggestions, or help, the website has feedback options that applicants can use. The government aims to make the experience smoother and faster for everyone.

The MEA added:

"Since 2015, the entire process, commencing with online application till selection of Yatris, is a fully computerized process. Therefore, applicants do not need to send letters or fax to seek information. The feedback options on the website can be used for obtaining information, registering observations, or making suggestions for improvement."

Earlier, there were reports that India and China were holding discussions to make travel arrangements easier for pilgrims on this route. Now that understanding has been reached, preparations are in full swing to make this year’s yatra a success.

Important details for Pilgrims

The Kailash Manasarovar Yatra is a demanding pilgrimage. Pilgrims must be physically fit because the journey involves traveling through rough terrains and high altitudes. Medical fitness is very important for all participants.

Before applying, pilgrims should make sure they meet all eligibility conditions. Generally, pilgrims between the ages of 18 to 70 years who are physically fit are allowed. A valid Indian passport is a must.

Here are some key points for applicants:

  • Age Limit: 18 to 70 years

  • Medical Fitness: Required (will be checked through medical tests)

  • Passport: Valid Indian passport mandatory

  • Travel Options: Two routes - Lipulekh Pass (Uttarakhand) and Nathu La Pass (Sikkim)

  • Batch Size: 50 pilgrims per batch

  • Application Website: kmy.gov.in

  • Selection Process: Computer-based random selection with gender balance

The route through Lipulekh Pass is known to be tougher. It involves trekking across mountainous areas. On the other hand, the Nathu La Pass route is easier because pilgrims can travel most of the distance by vehicle, making it suitable for older participants or those less comfortable with trekking.

In 2025, pilgrims traveling via Lipulekh will first gather in Delhi for briefings and medical check-ups. Then they will move to Uttarakhand for the journey ahead. Similarly, those taking the Nathu La Pass will assemble and move towards Sikkim.

The MEA has put several safety measures in place to make the journey safer. The Indian government, along with state authorities of Uttarakhand and Sikkim, will provide all necessary support including emergency medical help, travel assistance, and safety arrangements.

The journey usually takes 23 to 25 days through the Lipulekh route and about 15 to 18 days via Nathu La route.

Pilgrims will also have to bear the cost of the yatra, including charges for transportation, accommodation, food, insurance, and other expenses. The costs may differ based on the route chosen.

It is important to note that even after selection, applicants must pass medical fitness tests to confirm their participation.

Many previous pilgrims describe the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra as a life-changing experience. Seeing the sacred Mount Kailash and taking a holy dip in Lake Manasarovar is said to cleanse all sins and bring spiritual joy.

However, due to the challenging nature of the journey, pilgrims must prepare themselves properly before undertaking the trip. Physical training, regular exercise, and basic trekking practice can help a lot.

The MEA also recommends that people with serious medical conditions, breathing problems, heart issues, or other health concerns should not attempt this journey without consulting their doctor.

Finally, the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra is seen as a positive sign, especially after years of waiting due to the pandemic and border tensions. It gives a chance for devotees across India to once again experience the sacred journey they have long wished for.

Pilgrims and spiritual seekers are advised to register soon, as seats are limited and will be allotted through a computerized random selection.

For full details, interested people can visit the official website kmy.gov.in and apply online.
