Haryana CM targets Congress over constitutional values

Haryana CM says undermining constitutional values is in Congress’s DNA

On the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, the ruling BJP in Haryana strongly criticised the Congress party, accusing it of disrespecting the Constitution and suppressing democracy in the past. The BJP organised several events at both the state and district levels under the name Samvidhan Hatya Diwas (Constitution Murder Day) to remind citizens about the Emergency period in India and its impact on democracy.

At a state-level programme held in Karnal on Wednesday, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini accused the Congress of betraying the Constitution for political benefit. He said, “Undermining the core values of the Constitution is in the DNA of the Congress, even though they pretend to be its protectors.”

He added that the Emergency imposed in 1975 by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was one of the darkest times in Indian democracy. “The brutality still sends chills down our spines,” Saini said, adding that it was done only to satisfy the political will of those in power. According to him, it was a well-planned conspiracy to destroy the sacred Constitution for selfish reasons.

The Chief Minister also said that the Congress has not apologised even after 50 years. “That Emergency was a direct attack on democratic values, and even now, Congress has not expressed regret,” he said.

After the event, Saini also met with several of the 53 “Loktantra Senanis” (people who fought for democracy during the Emergency) and their family members. These individuals had opposed the Emergency and played key roles in defending civil liberties during that period.

BJP calls Congress anti-democracy

At another event held in Panchkula, state BJP president Mohan Lal Badoli also targeted the Congress party. He said, “Congress is an anti-democracy party. By imposing Emergency, it not only crushed the Constitution but also took away the rights of the press and ordinary people.”

Badoli reminded people that the Emergency was imposed at midnight on June 25, 1975. The reason given at that time was “internal disturbances,” but Badoli claimed that it was just an excuse. According to him, the real reason was that the Congress was afraid of losing power.

“Even 50 years later, Congress still thinks the same way,” Badoli said. “Whenever it is in trouble, it acts against the spirit of the Constitution. That mindset has not changed.” He said young people must be aware of what happened during the Emergency and who was responsible for it.

Both Saini and Badoli stressed that remembering this chapter in Indian history is important to protect democracy in the future. They said that such actions should never be repeated and that the present generation should learn lessons from the past.

The BJP used the event to reinforce its image as a protector of constitutional values and democracy while painting the Congress as a party that once tried to silence public voices. The party's efforts to mark the anniversary show how past political decisions continue to shape current political narratives.

In conclusion, the Haryana BJP's observance of the Emergency anniversary turned into a strong criticism of the Congress party, blaming it for harming the Constitution and democratic spirit of the country. By bringing attention to this period, the BJP aimed to remind the public of the importance of protecting democratic values and freedoms in modern India.
