ECI revises SIR dates for Uttar Pradesh

Election Commission of India issues revised dates for SIR in Uttar Pradesh, check details here

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced revised dates for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Uttar Pradesh. The updated schedule was confirmed by Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Navdeep Rinwa, through a social media post.

According to the revised timeline, the draft electoral roll for Uttar Pradesh will now be published on January 6, 2026. The final electoral roll will be released on March 6, 2026. The revision process is being carried out based on the qualifying date of January 1, 2026.

The Election Commission said the changes were made to ensure smooth completion of the revision process and proper handling of claims and objections from voters. The SIR exercise is aimed at cleaning the voter list by removing incorrect, duplicate, or outdated entries and ensuring that all eligible citizens are properly enrolled.

Revised SIR schedule explained

As per the new schedule issued by the Election Commission, the draft electoral roll will be published on January 6, 2026. From the same date, the period for filing claims and objections will begin and will continue until February 6, 2026.

During this period, voters will be allowed to submit requests for corrections, inclusion of names, or objections to entries in the draft roll. The notice period, scrutiny of forms, and disposal of claims and objections will take place between January 6 and February 27, 2026.

After completing all checks and corrections, the final electoral roll of Uttar Pradesh will be published on March 6, 2026. The revised list will then be used for upcoming elections in the state.

CEO Navdeep Rinwa said that voters whose names have been deleted during the revision process will get a chance to challenge the decision. Such voters can apply again using Form 6, which is also used for new voter registration. If any voter wants to object to the inclusion of a name in the draft list, they can do so by submitting Form 7.

The Election Commission has advised voters to carefully check their details once the draft roll is published and take timely action if any correction is needed. Officials have said that public participation is crucial to ensure that the voter list remains accurate and fair.

Why the SIR process is under scrutiny

The revision of the SIR schedule comes at a time when the electoral roll revision process in Uttar Pradesh is facing increased public and political scrutiny. The Special Intensive Revision exercise involved large-scale verification and removal of names from the voter list.

The nearly 52-day exercise began on November 4, 2025, and concluded on December 26, after being extended twice. The drive was conducted under the theme “Shuddh Nirvachak Namavali, Majboot Loktantra,” which translates to “Clean Electoral Roll, Strong Democracy.”

According to official estimates, the draft electoral roll is expected to contain around 12.55 crore voters. At the same time, nearly 2.89 crore names were removed from the pre-SIR voter list. The Election Commission said these deletions were made for valid reasons such as death of voters, permanent relocation, or duplication due to enrolment in more than one place.

However, the large number of deletions has sparked political controversy in the state. Opposition parties have raised concerns and alleged that the SIR process was biased and unfair. They claimed that genuine voters may have been wrongly removed from the list.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has rejected these allegations. The party has said that the revision was carried out strictly according to rules and was necessary to remove fake and duplicate voters. Election officials have also maintained that the process was transparent and followed legal guidelines.

To address concerns, the Election Commission has emphasized that the claims and objections period provides a safeguard for voters. Any eligible citizen whose name has been deleted can reapply and get their name restored after verification. Officials have said that no eligible voter will be denied the right to vote if they complete the required process within the given time.

The Election Commission has circulated the revised schedule to all concerned officials and asked them to ensure wide publicity so that voters are aware of the new dates. Voters are being encouraged to check the draft electoral roll once it is published and immediately report any issues.

Election authorities believe that the revised timeline will help complete the SIR process more effectively while giving enough time to voters to raise objections and submit claims. The final electoral roll, once published in March 2026, is expected to be more accurate and reliable.

The Election Commission has reiterated that a clean and correct voter list is essential for free and fair elections. It has urged political parties and citizens to cooperate and help strengthen the democratic process in Uttar Pradesh.
