Diljit Dosanjh brings turban, Punjabi culture and pride to Met Gala debut

Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh made a remarkable debut at the Met Gala 2025, held on May 5 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Embracing the event's theme, "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," Diljit paid homage to his Sikh heritage and Punjabi roots through his attire.

A regal tribute to Punjabi heritage

Diljit's ensemble, designed by American-Nepalese designer Prabal Gurung, featured an ivory and gold sherwani paired with a traditional tehmat. He accessorized with a bejeweled turban adorned with a white kalgi, a lion-headed, jewel-studded kirpan, and a layered necklace inspired by the iconic 1,000-carat Cartier necklace commissioned by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala in 1928. The necklace was recreated by Indian jeweler Golecha's, as the original remains housed in a museum. His cape showcased the map of Punjab and Gurmukhi script, reflecting his deep connection to his culture.

Cultural pride on a Global stage

Diljit expressed his sentiments on Instagram, stating, "Main Hoon Punjab #metgala," referencing a line from the song "Chamkila." He further emphasized, "Inspired by the Theme of Black Dandyism, I bring my turban, my culture, and my mother tongue Punjabi to the Met Gala." His stylist, Abhilasha Devnani, highlighted that the look was based on archival images of the Maharaja of Patiala, aiming to blend traditional elements with contemporary fashion.

During the event, Diljit interacted with international celebrities, including Shakira, Nicole Scherzinger, and Tessa Thompson. A video shared on social media captured Shakira giving a shoutout to India while mingling with Diljit, delighting fans and sparking calls for a musical collaboration between the two artists.
