Punjab civic poll results raise fresh worries for Congress ahead of 2027 assembly elections

The results of Punjab’s recent civic body elections have become an important political talking point, especially for the Congress party. Congress faces difficult questions

The party managed to win only 397 out of the 1,977 municipal wards, placing it far behind AAP.

Several Congress leaders reportedly discussed the results during internal meetings and expressed concern about weak performances in important areas.

One of the biggest talking points has been Gidderbaha, an area considered politically important for Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring.

Congress reportedly lost 17 out of 19 wards in the Gidderbaha Municipal Council.

Since Gidderbaha is seen as a stronghold of Raja Warring, the defeat created political embarrassment and triggered criticism inside the party.

Former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi reportedly raised concerns during a meeting and questioned how Congress could hope to perform well in the 2027 Assembly elections if it failed in such politically important regions.

The reported criticism highlighted growing concerns over party organisation and public support.

However, Raja Warring defended the party’s performance.

He said Congress workers fought hard and argued that the results should not be viewed only negatively.

According to him, Congress performed reasonably well in important cities such as Patiala, Ludhiana, Amritsar and Jalandhar.

He also accused the ruling party of helping itself during the elections by rejecting nomination papers of Congress candidates and putting pressure on voters.

Raja Warring claimed that hundreds of nomination papers were rejected and some candidates were elected unopposed, which he said affected the election outcome.

At the same time, Congress leaders know that public perception matters and repeated losses may weaken confidence before bigger elections.

Congress leadership begins strategy talks

After the election results, Congress held an important meeting in Delhi at the residence of party president Mallikarjun Kharge.

Senior leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal and Bhupesh Baghel, attended the discussions.

The meeting focused on Punjab politics and the road ahead for the party.

Congress leaders later described the meeting as part of normal planning for future elections.

Bhupesh Baghel said detailed discussions took place about improving party strategy and reconnecting with people in Punjab.
