Governor Reviews Night Shelter Facilities for Homeless Across Chandigarh
Chandigarh, 4 January 2026: The Governor of Punjab and Administrator, Chandigarh, Gulab Chand Kataria, today visited night shelter facilities at Government Multi-Specialty Hospital(GMSH) Sector-32, GMSH, Sector 16, PGIMER, PGI, Sector 12, and the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT), Sector 17, to review arrangements made for the homeless and needy.
During the visit, the Adminstrator took stock of facilities being provided at the shelters set up in view of prevailing cold conditions. He reviewed the availability of basic amenities such as bedding, blankets, drinking water, lighting, sanitation facilities and overall cleanliness. He also asked the Chandigarh Administration and the SSP to ensure distribution of blankets to the needy and homeless persons who are facing the brunt of cold during the winter season. He also interacted with officials on duty and emphasized the need to ensure dignity, safety and comfort for persons taking shelter at these facilities.
He also stressed that the welfare of the most vulnerable sections of society remains a top priority of the Chandigarh Administration. He further called for regular monitoring of shelter occupancy and upkeep, and for coordinated efforts among civic authorities, health institutions and social organizations to ensure that no one is left without protection during extreme weather conditions.
The Municipal Corporation has established temporary, waterproof night shelters at multiple locations across the city. These shelters are equipped with essential facilities including cushioned carpets, quilts, mattresses, pillows, blankets, electricity connections, drinking water, toilets and fire safety arrangements.
