Uttar Pradesh honour killing: Brother held for strangling sister over love affair

A shocking case of honour killing has come to light from Uttar Pradesh, where a young woman was allegedly strangled to death by her own brother for being in a relationship. The victim, Rupjahan, was in love with a boy from her village, but her family strongly opposed the match. Police have arrested the accused brother and started a detailed investigation.

The incident took place in Matavali Patti village under the Asmoli police station area. According to officials, the crime happened inside the family home when only the victim and her brother were present.

Family opposed the relationship

Police said Rupjahan was in a relationship with Shivam, who belongs to the Saini community. The two reportedly wanted to get married. However, her family did not approve of the relationship and repeatedly asked her to end it.

Despite the pressure, Rupjahan continued to stay in touch with Shivam. On Wednesday, she went out to meet him. This reportedly angered her family members, who later brought her back home.

According to investigators, the family tried to convince her again to break off the relationship. They even suggested that they would arrange her marriage with the same boy, but tensions inside the house remained high.

Police believe the situation escalated quickly. During the confrontation at home, her brother Jan-e-Alam allegedly strangled Rupjahan using a dupatta. Officials said the attack was so severe that she died on the spot.

Initial findings suggest the brother was strongly opposed to the relationship and may have acted in anger. However, police say they are still examining all possible angles.

Accused arrested after calling police

In a surprising development, the accused himself reportedly called the emergency number 112 after the crime and informed authorities about what had happened.

Police teams from the Asmoli police station rushed to the house immediately after receiving the call. Officers took the body into custody and sent it for postmortem examination.

The accused brother was arrested at the scene without resistance. Police registered an FIR and began questioning him to understand the full sequence of events.

ASP Kuldeep Kumar Singh confirmed the arrest and said the investigation is ongoing. He described the incident as a serious and disturbing crime. Officials are also speaking to family members and neighbours to gather more details.

Investigators said the victim’s family had earlier taken her back from a relative’s house after she had gone out to meet Shivam. This indicates that tensions over the relationship had been building for some time.

Police probe continues

Police are now trying to reconstruct the exact timeline of events leading to the murder. They are examining call records, statements from family members, and forensic evidence from the house.

Authorities have stressed that strict legal action will be taken. The accused is expected to be produced before a court following the completion of initial formalities.

The incident has once again highlighted the continuing problem of honour-based violence in some parts of the country. Such crimes usually occur when families believe their social reputation has been harmed by a relationship or marriage choice.

Law enforcement officials say awareness and strict punishment are necessary to prevent such tragedies. They have urged families to resolve disputes through dialogue instead of violence.

For now, the focus remains on completing the investigation and ensuring justice for the victim. Further details are expected as the police continue their probe into the case.
