AIIMS doctor booked for celebrating after Pahalgam attack

AIIMS Rishikesh doctor booked for distributing sweets a day after Pahalgam attack

A doctor working at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, has been booked by the police after a complaint was filed against him. The complaint said that the doctor gave out sweets at the hospital on April 23, 2025, which was one day after a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The attack had killed 26 people, mostly tourists. According to the complaint, the doctor’s action of distributing sweets hurt the feelings of many people. It was said that this act looked like a celebration of the tragic killings.

The police registered a First Information Report (FIR) on May 16 based on a complaint from Rajendra Pandey, who is the president of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) in Rishikesh. The FIR was registered under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). These sections relate to promoting enmity or hatred between religious groups, and actions that are harmful to national unity.

The complaint also mentioned that the doctor had earlier posted comments on social media that were against India. According to Pandey, when people asked the doctor why he was giving out sweets, the doctor said it was to celebrate Eid. But Eid had been celebrated about a month earlier, so people found this explanation suspicious. The complainant said the doctor openly supported the terrorists who killed innocent people, which caused anger among the Hindu community.

Doctor says it was a gesture of unity

Senior Sub Inspector Vinod Kumar of Rishikesh Police Station confirmed that the FIR was registered and the investigation is going on. However, he refused to say whether the doctor had been questioned or not.

The doctor, who is a junior resident and originally from West Bengal, denied all the allegations made against him. He said that on the evening of April 23, he was working in the emergency operation theatre. Some nursing officers at the hospital had asked him for sweets to celebrate a late Eid event. He said that Eid had actually been celebrated earlier, but this was a small gathering to express happiness and unity.

He explained that he ordered sweets and food as a gesture of goodwill and peace. The doctor claimed that this simple act was being misunderstood and misrepresented to create communal hatred. He said he is facing mental harassment because of these accusations.

The doctor also shared that after the incident, following advice from his seniors, he went home. He recently learned about the police complaint against him and said he will take legal steps against those who are causing him mental harassment.

On April 22, 2025, a terror attack in Pahalgam shocked the nation. The attack targeted tourists visiting the scenic town in Jammu and Kashmir, killing 26 people. This tragic event created widespread sorrow and anger across India. The incident was condemned by political leaders, religious groups, and citizens alike.

The attack also raised concerns about safety and security in tourist areas. After such a tragic event, people expected unity and calm. Any action that seemed to celebrate such violence was seen as deeply hurtful and unacceptable.

The FIR and legal charges explained

The police registered the FIR under sections 196 (1)(a) and 196 (1)(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. These sections are meant to stop people from spreading hatred or enmity between religious or social groups. The complaint also cited section 197 (1)(a), which forbids making statements or doing acts that harm national integration.

The FIR was filed to investigate whether the doctor’s actions and earlier social media posts were promoting disharmony or hurting public feelings. Such laws exist to protect communal harmony and prevent unrest.

News of the doctor distributing sweets so soon after the terror attack caused strong reactions. The complainant and many people felt it was insensitive and showed support for the attackers. In a diverse country like India, where religious harmony is very important, such acts can lead to unrest.

The doctor’s explanation, that it was a gesture of unity to celebrate Eid, did not convince everyone. Many said Eid had been celebrated a month before, so this did not make sense. Some community members expressed outrage, feeling that the doctor was celebrating the killings.

On the other hand, some people defended the doctor’s right to express joy in a hospital environment, saying it could have been misunderstood. This difference of opinion shows how delicate communal issues are in India.

The complaint also mentioned the doctor’s earlier anti-India posts on social media. Social media is a powerful platform that can influence public opinion. Posts against the nation or any community can quickly cause tension.

Authorities often monitor social media to check for harmful content that might disturb peace. In this case, the doctor’s past posts raised suspicion and added to the seriousness of the complaint.

Next steps in the investigation

The police are currently investigating the case. They will examine the doctor’s actions, the sweets distribution event, and his social media activity. The investigation will also check if any laws were broken and if the doctor’s conduct harmed public feelings or national unity.

Depending on the investigation’s findings, the police may question the doctor further or take legal action. The doctor has said he will defend himself and fight any false accusations in court.

This case highlights how sensitive communal and national feelings are in India. Even small actions can be seen in different ways. The doctor’s act of distributing sweets, meant to celebrate Eid and spread happiness, has been viewed by many as a sign of disrespect toward the victims of a terror attack.

In a diverse society, it is important to be careful and respectful toward all communities, especially after tragic events. Peace and unity should always come first.

The investigation will decide the truth behind the allegations and help maintain harmony in the community.
