Expelled Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Ritabrata Banerjee was appointed as the new Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly on Wednesday. His appointment came after he secured the support of a large group of legislators in the state assembly.
According to reports, Banerjee received the backing of 58 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) out of the 80 legislators elected in the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections. A formal letter signed by these MLAs was submitted to the Speaker of the Assembly, who accepted it and recognised Banerjee as the Leader of the Opposition.
The development marks an important moment in West Bengal politics, as Banerjee was previously expelled from the Trinamool Congress. Despite his expulsion, he has managed to gather significant support among elected representatives, allowing him to take up one of the most important positions in the state legislature.

Javed Khan, Sandeepan Saha, Sabina Yasmin and Shiuli Saha have been appointed as deputy leaders of the legislature party. Their role will be to assist the Leader of the Opposition and help manage legislative business.
Political analysts say that forming a leadership team is necessary for ensuring smooth functioning within the Assembly. The deputy leaders will help coordinate discussions, represent the party during debates and communicate with legislators on important issues.
The announcement of multiple deputy leaders suggests that the opposition wants to create a broad leadership structure that includes representatives from different regions and groups.
At a press conference after his appointment, Ritabrata Banerjee addressed the media and spoke about the future direction of the party and its role in the Assembly.
Interestingly, Banerjee stated that despite recent political developments, the group continues to regard Trinamool Congress chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as its leader.
His remarks attracted attention because he was previously expelled from the TMC. By acknowledging Mamata Banerjee's leadership, Ritabrata appeared to signal that political differences do not necessarily mean a complete break from the party's broader ideological roots.
