UP storm tragedy kills 89 as CM Yogi orders relief and compensation

At least 89 people lost their lives after heavy rain, powerful dust storms, hailstorms and lightning strikes hit several parts of Uttar Pradesh on May 13. The sudden change in weather caused major destruction across many districts, damaging homes, uprooting trees and affecting crops and livestock. The tragic weather disaster also left dozens of people injured and created panic in many areas of the state.

Following the large-scale damage and loss of life, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered immediate relief and rescue operations in all affected districts. He directed officials to remain alert and ensure that victims and their families receive quick help and compensation without delay.

According to official figures released by the state administration, 89 people died because of the severe weather conditions. At least 53 people were injured, while 114 livestock animals also died during the storms and lightning strikes. In addition, 87 houses suffered damage across different regions of Uttar Pradesh.

Districts such as Prayagraj, Bhadohi, Fatehpur and Kanpur Dehat reported extensive destruction due to the sudden storm and heavy rainfall. Trees fell on roads and houses, electricity supply was affected in many areas and standing crops were damaged badly.

The state government has now started large-scale rescue, relief and rehabilitation work to support affected families and restore normal life as quickly as possible.

Heavy rain and storm cause widespread destruction

The storm and rain hit many districts of Uttar Pradesh with strong winds, lightning and hailstorms. In several areas, the weather turned dangerous within a very short period, giving people little time to protect themselves.

Strong winds uprooted large trees, damaged electric poles and destroyed weak structures. In many villages and towns, roofs of houses were blown away due to the storm. Some people reportedly died after walls collapsed or trees fell on them during the heavy rainfall and strong winds.

Lightning strikes also caused several deaths and injuries. Experts often warn that lightning becomes highly dangerous during intense storms, especially in open fields and rural areas where many people work outdoors.

Apart from human casualties, livestock losses were also significant. Official data showed that 114 animals died because of the severe weather conditions. For many rural families, livestock are an important source of income and survival. Therefore, these losses have created additional financial problems for affected villagers.

Agricultural fields in several districts also suffered damage. Heavy rain, hailstorms and strong winds reportedly affected crops that were ready for harvesting. Farmers are now worried about financial losses because bad weather has damaged standing crops and reduced agricultural output.

Many roads were blocked after trees and electric poles collapsed. Local authorities had to clear debris and restore traffic movement in several districts. Electricity supply was also interrupted in many places due to damage to power infrastructure.

Residents in affected areas described scenes of fear and confusion as the storm intensified rapidly. Some families reportedly spent hours without electricity while emergency teams worked to restore basic services.

The weather department had earlier warned about unstable weather conditions in parts of northern India. However, the intensity of the storm and destruction shocked many residents.

Natural disasters such as storms, lightning and heavy rainfall often become more dangerous during seasonal weather changes. Experts advise people to stay indoors, avoid open spaces and remain cautious during severe weather alerts.

CM Yogi orders immediate compensation and rescue work

Taking serious note of the tragedy, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath instructed district officials to speed up rescue and relief operations in all affected areas. He said that negligence towards victims would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

The Chief Minister directed all District Magistrates to personally visit affected families and ensure that they receive every possible form of assistance from the administration. He also instructed officials to quickly assess the damage caused to houses, crops, livestock and public property.

CM Yogi specifically ordered that compensation should be provided to the families of deceased victims within 24 hours. The government wants financial help to reach affected people as quickly as possible so families can manage immediate difficulties after the disaster.

The Office of the Relief Commissioner is continuously monitoring the situation across the state. Senior officials have also been asked to visit affected districts and personally supervise rescue operations and relief distribution.

The state administration has been instructed to remain on high alert because unstable weather conditions may continue in some regions. Officials from the revenue department, agriculture department and insurance companies have also been directed to conduct surveys of the damage and prepare detailed reports.

The government plans to use these reports to assess financial losses and provide proper assistance to affected people, especially farmers whose crops and property suffered damage.

Authorities have also advised citizens to remain cautious during bad weather and avoid unsafe locations during storms and lightning activity. People have been urged to stay indoors whenever possible and follow official safety instructions.

Rescue and rehabilitation work is currently being carried out on a war footing in the affected districts. Emergency teams are helping clear roads, restore electricity supply and provide support to injured people and displaced families.

Officials say the administration is trying to ensure that no affected family is left without assistance. Relief materials, emergency services and financial aid are being arranged in many districts.

The tragedy has once again highlighted the dangers posed by sudden extreme weather events. Experts believe climate-related weather changes are increasing the frequency of intense storms, heavy rainfall and lightning incidents in many parts of India.

For now, the main focus of the Uttar Pradesh government remains on helping victims, restoring normal life and ensuring quick compensation for families who lost loved ones or suffered major damage during the devastating storm and rain disaster.
