Where Lohagad Fort is and why it matters

Lohagad Fort is around 50 kilometres from Pune and is close to Lonavala, a popular hill station. The fort stands at a height of about 1,033 metres above sea level. This high location made it very useful in ancient times because it gave rulers a clear view of the surrounding area.

The fort is connected to another famous fort called Visapur Fort. Many visitors often explore both forts together because they are very close to each other.

The name “Lohagad” comes from two Marathi words. “Loha” means iron, and “gad” means fort. Together, it means “Iron Fort.” This name shows the strength of the fort and how difficult it was to attack.

Historians say the exact date of its construction is still not known. However, it is believed to be more than 2,000 years old. Over time, many powerful dynasties ruled over it. These included the Satavahanas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, Mughals and Marathas.

This shows that Lohagad was always seen as an important fort because of its location and strength.

The fort is most closely linked to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He captured Lohagad in 1648 as part of his plan to strengthen the Maratha kingdom. But in 1665, under the Treaty of Purandar, he had to give it to the Mughals.

A few years later, in 1670, Shivaji Maharaj won it back. This was an important moment because it showed his strong military power and determination.

Many stories also say that the wealth collected during the famous Surat campaign was stored at Lohagad. Since the fort was strong and difficult to reach, it was considered a safe place for treasure.

What makes Lohagad Fort special today

One of the most unique parts of Lohagad Fort is the “Vinchu Kata,” which means “Scorpion’s Tail.” It is a long, narrow part of the fort that stretches out like the tail of a scorpion. This part is one of the biggest attractions for visitors.

In ancient times, this structure was also useful for defence. It allowed soldiers to watch enemies from far away and protect the fort better.

Another special feature of Lohagad is its four large gates. These gates are still standing and show the excellent architecture of the past. Walking through them gives people a feeling of stepping back into history.

The walls of the fort are also very strong and have survived for hundreds of years. This is one reason why it is called the Iron Fort.

Today, Lohagad is one of the most visited trekking spots in Maharashtra. During the monsoon season, the fort becomes even more beautiful. The hills turn green, clouds cover the top and waterfalls can be seen nearby.

The trek to the fort is considered easy, which makes it suitable even for beginners. Families, students and adventure lovers often visit during weekends.
