Rain hits Delhi-NCR, more expected by afternoon

Delhi-NCR lashed by rain, IMD predicts heavier showers by afternoon

Delhi and its nearby areas received heavy rain on Tuesday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that very intense rain will continue in many parts of the National Capital Region (NCR) for the next 1 to 2 hours. Many areas already saw roads filled with water and traffic jams.

The IMD issued a “nowcast” in the morning, which is a short-term weather alert. It said, “Intense to very intense spells of rain very likely to continue over many parts of Delhi and NCR during the next 1-2 hours.” Rajaji Marg and other parts of Central Delhi were seen completely wet due to strong showers.

These rains are part of a longer wet spell expected in the region. The weather department also said that the national capital will see regular showers until August 3. It is expected that the rain will be light to moderate on most days, but there may be sudden heavy rain at times, along with thunderstorms or lightning.

Rain forecast for the coming days

According to the IMD’s regional centre, the sky over Delhi will remain mostly cloudy between July 31 and August 3. During this period, people can expect light rainfall across the city. Some areas might see slightly heavier rain, but it will be scattered.

The detailed forecast for July 31 to August 3 mentions: “Partly cloudy sky. Very light to light rain accompanied with thunderstorm or lightning.”

Officials from the IMD have also said that the kind of intense rainfall seen on Tuesday morning may happen again, so people should stay alert, especially in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging.

On Monday, heavy showers already caused waterlogging in many parts of Delhi. Roads in residential colonies, markets, and even near office areas were filled with water, causing inconvenience to commuters. Several buses and cars were stuck in water, and people found it difficult to walk or drive.

The Delhi traffic police also issued alerts on social media, asking people to avoid certain routes that were heavily waterlogged. They also advised people to plan their travel with extra time in hand.

Public urged to stay alert and travel safely

The IMD has asked people to be careful during the next few days, as the rain may lead to slippery roads, flooding in underpasses, and delays in traffic. They have also asked residents to stay indoors during heavy thunderstorms and avoid areas with open electrical wires or trees.

Authorities in Delhi have also said that emergency teams are on standby to manage any serious flooding. Pumps have been arranged to clear water from roads, and help lines are active for those facing emergencies.

In the meantime, residents of Delhi-NCR are advised to carry umbrellas and raincoats, check traffic updates before leaving home, and avoid unnecessary travel during intense rainfall.

The good news is that these rains have also brought some relief from the high temperatures and humidity that Delhi had been facing for the past few weeks. The weather has turned cooler, and many people enjoyed the fresh air and greenery after the showers.

However, the IMD has clearly mentioned that more rainfall is likely over the coming days. So, people should stay updated through news or weather apps and take proper precautions when going out.
