Expanding education access: IIT Madras NPTEL translates courses into Hindi

In a bid to enhance accessibility, NPTEL from IIT Madras has translated 207 technical courses, including 'Introduction to Internet of Things', into Hindi. This initiative is crucial in bridging language barriers.

Language accessibility efforts

NPTEL assembled a team of 1,029 Hindi translators and 139 quality controllers.They've published 199 e-books in Hindi and offer 1,200 hours of video content with Hindi audio.Key disciplines prioritized include Computer Science, Social Sciences, and Electrical Engineering.NPTEL plans to expand translations with courses like 'Introduction to Machine Learning' using machine learning tools.The initiative aims to assist learners transitioning from regional languages to English for technical education.

NPTEL translated courses into 11 languages including Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu.This aims to aid learners completing schooling in regional languages, easing the transition to technical education in English.Prof. Rajesh Kumar highlighted the importance of translation, breaking barriers for learners.Prof. Abhijit P Deshpande emphasized innovative ways to provide translated content, including subtitles, transcripts, and audio tracks.

About NPTEL

NPTEL, a joint effort of IITs and IISc, funded by MoE India, started in 2003.Initially aimed at democratizing quality education, NPTEL now offers over 700 courses across 22 disciplines every semester.Courses undergo rigorous review by NPTEL Quality Control (QC) experts and are available free of charge in various formats.

Over 20,000 hours of video content across 244 courses, including 163 engineering courses, have been translated.Technical terms remain in English (transliterated) for accuracy.980 translated books are available on the NPTEL website and Swayam portal.This translation initiative by NPTEL not only improves accessibility but also facilitates a diverse learning environment, catering to learners across India.
