Microsoft to cut 9,000 jobs in latest layoffs

Microsoft announces second wave of job cuts, 9,000 employees to be laid off

Microsoft has announced another round of major layoffs, its second in just a few months. This time, the company plans to cut around 9,000 jobs, which is about 4% of its global workforce. Microsoft had around 2.28 lakh (228,000) employees worldwide as of June 2024. These job cuts will affect teams in many countries, including those working in sales and the Xbox gaming division.

The company said the decision is part of a larger plan to adjust to a changing business environment. In a statement, Microsoft said, “We continue to implement organizational changes necessary to best position the company and teams for success in a dynamic marketplace.”

The company did not give the exact number at first but later reports from the Associated Press suggested around 9,000 jobs would be affected. Microsoft had already laid off about 6,000 employees in May 2025, making this the second large-scale cut this year. These moves follow an even larger round of job cuts in 2023, where 10,000 positions were removed.

Microsoft explained that even during good times, it often reshapes its workforce to meet the changing needs of the business. The company is trying to stay ahead in the competitive tech world, especially by investing heavily in artificial intelligence (AI). These shifts often mean new roles are created, while others are removed.

Global Impact

According to Bloomberg, job losses are happening across Microsoft’s offices, especially in Europe. In Stockholm, its King division, known for making the Candy Crush game, is laying off around 200 employees — 10% of its staff. Other offices like ZeniMax, which is involved in video games, have also started informing workers about layoffs.

In April, Microsoft told its employees that it would begin using outside firms for handling software sales to small and mid-size businesses. This move was part of the company’s effort to focus more on long-term growth and efficiency.

The tech giant continues to restructure teams and roles as it focuses more on AI development. Many big technology firms, including Google, Meta, and Amazon, are making similar changes in how they operate and where they invest money and talent.

Even though Microsoft is making more money from its cloud services and AI, it says changes like layoffs are sometimes necessary to keep the company strong and flexible for the future. While the company is cutting jobs in some areas, it is also expected to hire in others where new skills are needed.

These job cuts have caused concern among employees, especially as some were informed last minute. A recent report mentioned that one woman learned about her layoff during an unexpected meeting with a senior manager.

Microsoft says that it will continue to support the employees affected by these changes, including offering them help with finding new jobs and severance packages. However, for many workers, this is still a difficult time.

In short, Microsoft’s new round of layoffs is a big step as the company adjusts its workforce for future goals. While it aims to grow in areas like AI, many employees are facing the challenges of job loss and career uncertainty.
