Jyeshtha Purnima is one of the important full moon days in the Hindu calendar. Every month, Purnima comes on the last day of Shukla Paksha, when the moon appears full and bright in the sky. This day is considered very holy by Hindu devotees.

The Purnima that falls in the month of Jyeshtha is called Jyeshtha Purnima. In 2026, this special day will be observed on June 29. Many devotees worship Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Shiva and Chandra Dev on this day. It is believed that prayers and fasting on this day bring peace, happiness and prosperity.

Jyeshtha Purnima is also known as Vat Purnima in many parts of India. On this day, married women observe the Vat Savitri Vrat for the long life and good health of their husbands. This day also marks the celebration of Kabir Das Jayanti and Batuk Bhairavi Jayanti, making it even more special.

This sacred day is linked with spiritual growth, family well-being and good fortune. Many people also perform charity, listen to holy stories and take part in religious activities.

Date and timings

According to the Hindu Panchang, Jyeshtha Purnima in 2026 will begin on June 29 at 3:06 AM and end on June 30 at 5:26 AM.

Since the Purnima tithi is active during sunrise on June 29, the vrat and puja will be observed on that day.

The moonrise on June 29 will happen at 7:16 PM. This is an important time because many devotees offer water (arghya) to the moon in the evening.

The important shubh muhurat for the day are:

  • Brahma Muhurat: 4:06 AM to 4:46 AM

  • Pratah Sandhya: 4:26 AM to 5:26 AM

  • Abhijit Muhurat: 11:57 AM to 12:52 PM

  • Vijay Muhurat: 2:44 PM to 3:40 PM

  • Godhuli Muhurat: 7:22 PM to 7:42 PM

  • Sayahna Sandhya: 7:23 PM to 8:23 PM

  • Amrit Kaal: 8:53 PM to 10:40 PM

These timings are considered very good for prayers and rituals.

For many people, starting the day during Brahma Muhurat is seen as very lucky. It is believed that prayers done during this time give better spiritual results.

Rituals and vrat rules

The day starts with an early morning bath. Taking a bath in a holy river like the Ganga is considered very auspicious. If that is not possible, people can add a few drops of Ganga Jal to their bath water at home.

After bathing, devotees clean the puja place and take a sankalp (promise) for the fast. This means they decide to observe the vrat with full faith.

People then worship:

  • Lord Vishnu

  • Goddess Lakshmi

  • Lord Shiva

  • Chandra Dev

Flowers, fruits, sweets and incense sticks are offered during the puja. Many families also organise or listen to the Satyanarayan Katha, which is believed to bring blessings and remove problems.

In the evening, after moonrise, devotees offer water to the moon and pray for peace, health and prosperity.

For married women, Vat Purnima is very special. Women worship the banyan tree and tie sacred threads around it while praying for their husbands’ long life. This tradition is connected to the story of Savitri and Satyavan.

Fasting is an important part of the day. Some people keep a full-day fast with only water, while others eat fruits and milk.

Allowed foods during the vrat include:

  • Milk

  • Fruits

  • Paneer

  • Cashews

  • Almonds

  • Makhana

  • Bottle gourd

  • Cucumber

  • Tomatoes

Devotees avoid grains, rice, wheat and normal cooked food.

Charity is also very important on Purnima. Donating clothes, food or money to poor people is considered highly rewarding. Feeding cows and helping needy people is also believed to bring blessings.

Spiritually, Jyeshtha Purnima is seen as a day to remove negativity and bring positive energy into life. Many people spend time in meditation, chanting and reading religious books.

The full moon is also connected with calmness and mental peace. This is why worshipping Chandra Dev on this day is considered beneficial for emotional balance.

For devotees, Jyeshtha Purnima is not just a fasting day but a chance to purify the mind, strengthen faith and pray for a better life. By following the rituals with devotion, many believe they can receive divine blessings and happiness in their family.
