The fast-paced, screen-heavy lifestyle of modern Indians is taking a toll on mental well-being. But an increasing number of people are finding joy, balance, and even better sleep with the help of their pets. A recent survey by Mars (a global pet care company) and Calm India highlights how pets are not only improving emotional health but also helping people disconnect from digital distractions.
Pets are reducing screen time
One of the most surprising findings of the survey is that pets are helping people spend less time on social media. Over 57 per cent of Indian pet parents admitted they spend fewer hours scrolling through Instagram or Facebook because they prefer playing or cuddling with their pets. Not just social media, 92 per cent of respondents said that having a pet encourages them to unplug from screens altogether. Instead of getting lost in endless videos, they are spending real moments of joy with their furry companions.
The connection between pets and better sleep is becoming clearer. Around 79 per cent of Indian pet owners said that their pets help them sleep better. Globally, 59 per cent of pet parents agree with this. Pets provide comfort, reduce bedtime anxiety, and create a feeling of security, which improves sleep quality. Simply having a pet nearby can bring calmness and relaxation at night.
More social connections and outdoor time
Modern urban life often leaves people feeling isolated, but pets are changing that. Almost 70 per cent of Indian pet parents say their pets have helped improve their social lives. Aparna, a law student from Ghaziabad, shares that her poodle, Cheddar, makes her family socially active. “People in our society know us because of Cheddar. We chat with other pet owners, attend pet birthday parties, and have made new friends,” she says.
Pets also motivate owners to go outdoors and stay active. Around 61 per cent of respondents said that their pets encourage them to step out for walks. This is a refreshing change from the sedentary, indoor routine of modern working professionals.
Pets are proving to be silent therapists. About 93 per cent of Indian pet parents said their pets prompt them to take breaks from work or household chores. These breaks help reduce stress and give owners a moment to relax.
Pets are also known to reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) and boost oxytocin, known as the "love hormone." This emotional connection creates a sense of purpose, reduces loneliness, and improves overall mental health.

The challenge of pet abandonment
While pets bring endless joy and emotional benefits, India is facing a troubling rise in pet abandonment. A 2024 report revealed that 38 per cent of respondents were considering giving up their dogs, and 57 per cent were thinking of parting ways with their cats. The growing trend of DINK (Dual Income, No Kids) couples adopting pets is heartening, but the lack of long-term commitment is concerning.
Owning a pet is a serious responsibility. They require care, time, and emotional attention. Pet experts believe that awareness campaigns and stricter regulations on pet breeding and sales could help tackle the abandonment issue.
The new survey proves that pets are more than just companions—they are catalysts for better lifestyles. From reducing screen time to improving sleep and mental health, the benefits are undeniable. But for these advantages to last, pet parents must take their responsibility seriously.
Having a pet is like having a loyal friend who gives unconditional love. Modern Indians, caught between deadlines and digital distractions, are rediscovering the value of real connections through their pets. And in that simple joy, they are finding a healthier and happier life.
