HDFC Bank UPI services to face brief downtime
HDFC Bank announces temporary disruption in UPI services on scheduled date
HDFC Bank, India’s largest private sector bank, has informed its customers about a scheduled system maintenance that will affect UPI services for a short period. The bank said this step is necessary to improve customer experience and strengthen digital services.
According to the official update, the maintenance activity will take place on August 22, 2025, from 12:00 am to 1:30 am. During this 90-minute window, UPI transactions will remain unavailable for all HDFC Bank customers.
The services that will be directly impacted include:
-
UPI transactions linked to HDFC Bank savings and current accounts.
-
UPI payments made using RuPay credit cards issued by HDFC Bank.
-
Transactions done through the HDFC Bank Mobile Banking app and third-party apps (TPAPs) such as Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm that use HDFC Bank as the payment service provider.
Merchants who use HDFC Bank accounts for UPI collections will also be affected during this maintenance period. The bank has requested customers to plan their urgent transactions in advance to avoid any inconvenience.
Other services to remain offline for longer hours
Apart from UPI services, HDFC Bank has also issued an advisory about the temporary unavailability of customer care and certain digital banking services. Reports suggest that multiple customer support platforms will be down for system upgrades.
The scheduled downtime will begin on August 22, 2025, at 11:00 pm and continue till August 23, 2025, at 6:00 am. This means that for seven hours, some services will not function, including:
-
Customer Care services such as Phone Banking IVR, Email, and Social Media assistance.
-
ChatBanking on WhatsApp.
-
SMS Banking services.
During this period, the only active helpline will be the toll-free number for hotlisting debit or credit cards and accounts, which customers can use in case of card loss, fraud, or urgent blocking requests.
In its advisory email to customers, the bank clarified that this temporary pause is purely for system upgrades and improvements. Once the maintenance is complete, services will be back to normal.
On the positive side, many core services will continue to function without interruption. These include:
-
PhoneBanking agent-assisted services.
-
HDFC NetBanking portal.
-
HDFC MobileBanking app.
-
PayZapp and MyCards apps.
This means customers will still be able to carry out most of their regular banking activities such as fund transfers, account management, and card services.
Bank performance update
While the advisory has put the spotlight on service downtime, the bank also recently released its financial performance report for the April–June quarter of FY 2025-26.
The results showed that HDFC Bank’s consolidated net profit declined by 1.31% compared to the same quarter last year. The private lender reported a net profit of ₹16,258 crore in Q1 2025-26, whereas the figure was ₹16,475 crore in Q1 2024-25.
Despite this minor dip in profit, HDFC Bank remains one of the strongest private lenders in India, with a vast customer base spread across both urban and rural areas. Analysts believe that the bank’s focus on technology upgrades and digital banking improvements shows its commitment to long-term growth.
Digital transactions through UPI and mobile apps have seen a massive increase in recent years, and HDFC Bank has been one of the leading banks enabling these services. By scheduling maintenance work during late-night hours, the bank hopes to minimize customer inconvenience while ensuring smoother, faster, and more secure digital payments in the future.
