Family of 4 killed in Uttarakhand after house wall collapses

Uttarakhand tragedy: Family of 4, including 2 minors, killed as house wall collapses

In a heartbreaking incident in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district, a family of four was killed after a wall of their house collapsed. The accident took place on Thursday night in Mori village, which is located about one kilometre uphill from the main road.

The victims have been identified as 26-year-old Gulam Hussain, his wife Rukma Khatoon (23), and their two minor children. All of them died after being trapped under the debris when a part of their house collapsed during the night.

The local police received the information from the Mori police station early the next day. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), revenue department officials, and local police immediately reached the spot and began a rescue operation.

Unfortunately, by the time the rescue team arrived, all four members of the family had already died. The bodies were recovered by the joint team of officials.

Arpan Yaduvanshi, the SDRF commandant, confirmed the details and said, “We received a report from Mori police station regarding a house collapse in village Mori. Some people were feared trapped under the debris. Our team reached the location and found that four people from one family had died in the incident.”

He added that the house was located on a slope, about one kilometre uphill from the main road, which made reaching the site more difficult. However, the teams managed to carry out the operation and recover all the bodies.

Cause still unknown

The exact reason behind the wall collapse is not yet known. Officials have not given any confirmation on whether it was due to heavy rains, poor construction, or any other factor. However, the local administration has started an investigation into the matter.

The SDRF commandant also mentioned that the rescue operation has been completed and the team has coordinated with the local administration for all further actions, including support for the family’s last rites and documentation.

This tragic event has brought attention to the condition of houses in remote hill villages, where natural disasters, old structures, and poor construction materials often result in such deadly incidents. Villagers and local officials are now urging the state government to survey older buildings and provide support for safer housing in these areas.

Several other incidents like this have happened in different parts of the country, especially during the monsoon season. Just a day before, a similar building collapse in Mathura took the lives of three people, including two children. Another case in Lucknow’s Ganeshganj area saw labourers trapped under the rubble after a wall came down.

Such repeated accidents highlight the urgent need for safety checks and better infrastructure in both urban and rural areas. As the monsoon rains continue across North India, there are growing concerns about more such accidents due to weakening walls and water-logged structures.

For now, the residents of Mori village mourn the loss of an entire young family, gone too soon. The local administration has promised to assist them in every possible way and take steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
