Candidates finalised for Himachal civic polls
1,147 candidates remain in Himachal urban local body elections after withdrawals
The election process for urban local body polls in Himachal Pradesh has moved into its next stage after the withdrawal of nominations by many candidates. According to officials from the Himachal Pradesh State Election Commission, a total of 1,147 candidates are now in the contest for elections in 51 urban local bodies across the state.
The commission said that 237 candidates withdrew their nomination papers on the last day allowed for withdrawal. After this process, the final list of contesting candidates was prepared.
The elections will be held on May 17, and voting will take place through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). Polling will begin at 7 am and continue until 3 pm.
The urban local body elections are important because they decide representatives for municipal councils and nagar panchayats in different towns and cities of Himachal Pradesh. These elected representatives are responsible for local development, sanitation, roads, water supply, and other civic services.
Officials said preparations for the elections are continuing smoothly across the state.
Nomination and withdrawal process
The State Election Commission shared detailed information about the nomination process. According to officials, a total of 1,426 nomination papers were originally submitted by candidates wishing to contest the elections.
After scrutiny of documents and eligibility checks, 32 nomination papers were rejected. This left 1,394 valid nominations.
Following this, candidates were given time to withdraw their nominations if they no longer wanted to contest. On the final day of withdrawal, 237 candidates decided to step out of the race.
As a result, the final number of candidates contesting the elections now stands at 1,147.
The commission also completed the process of allotting election symbols to candidates. Election symbols are important because many voters identify candidates through these symbols during voting.
Officials said all arrangements are being made to ensure free and fair elections in all urban local bodies.
The use of Electronic Voting Machines will help speed up the voting and counting process. Authorities said polling staff will be trained properly to manage the voting process smoothly.
Election officials are also expected to ensure security arrangements at polling stations to avoid any disturbances during voting day.
Some candidates elected unopposed
The election commission also confirmed that 10 candidates have already been elected unopposed from different wards. This means no other candidate remained in the contest against them after withdrawals.
These unopposed victories came from areas including Nagar Panchayat Karsog, Jawalamukhi, and Nerwa.
Officials said that in some wards, only one candidate remained after other candidates withdrew their nominations. Under election rules, such candidates are declared winners without voting.
Interestingly, no nomination paper was filed for Ward Number 7 of Nagar Panchayat Karsog in Mandi district. This means there will be no contest in that ward at present.
Urban local body elections play an important role in local governance because elected representatives directly deal with daily public issues in towns and smaller cities.
These representatives work on local development projects, maintenance of roads, garbage management, drainage systems, street lighting, public parks, and water supply.
Political parties and independent candidates are both participating in the elections. In many places, local issues such as roads, cleanliness, traffic, water shortages, and civic services are expected to influence voters.

Experts say urban local body elections are often closely connected to grassroots politics because local residents directly experience the work done by municipal bodies.
In Himachal Pradesh, urban local bodies include municipal corporations, municipal councils, and nagar panchayats. These institutions are responsible for managing civic administration in urban areas.
Election campaigns are expected to increase in the coming days as candidates reach out to voters before polling day.
Officials have appealed to voters to participate actively in the democratic process and cast their votes peacefully on May 17.
The State Election Commission is also expected to monitor the election campaign closely to ensure that all candidates follow election rules and guidelines.
Authorities said necessary arrangements for EVMs, polling staff, and security are already underway in different districts.
The commission aims to complete the election process peacefully and announce results without delay after counting is completed.
Many candidates are focusing their campaigns on improving local infrastructure and solving civic problems faced by residents in towns and smaller urban areas.
Voters are expected to decide representatives based on local performance, public services, and development promises.
The urban local body elections are considered important because they affect everyday life at the local level more directly than larger state or national elections.
In simple terms, after the withdrawal of 237 candidates, a total of 1,147 candidates are now contesting the Himachal Pradesh urban local body elections. Polling will take place on May 17 using Electronic Voting Machines, while 10 candidates have already won unopposed from different wards across the state.
