India is becoming stronger in defence and military technology with the help of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). DRDO is working on many modern systems that help protect the country and improve military strength. From missiles and air defence systems to military transport tools and space mission support, DRDO is helping India depend more on its own technology instead of buying everything from other countries.

The organisation is developing many advanced systems to improve India’s defence readiness. These include missile technology, military vehicles, logistics systems and even support for India’s Gaganyaan space mission.

The main goal is to make India more self-reliant in defence and improve safety for soldiers, citizens and national borders.

New defence technologies for stronger security

One of DRDO’s important projects is the Rail Track Rocket Sled (RTRS). This is a high-speed testing system that uses rocket power to move equipment at very high speeds on railway tracks designed for testing.

RTRS helps scientists test military equipment under difficult conditions. It can run at speeds of more than 1,000 kilometres per hour. The system checks how missiles, aircraft parts, parachutes, armoured vehicles and emergency escape systems perform during extreme situations.

The RTRS has also played an important role in India’s Gaganyaan mission, which aims to send Indian astronauts into space. It helped test crew escape systems and parachutes that may be used during emergencies.

Another major technology developed by DRDO is the Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR). This is a special propulsion technology for future missiles.

In simple words, it helps missiles fly faster and longer. Unlike normal rockets, SFDR technology allows missiles to maintain speed and energy throughout their flight.

This means future missiles using this technology can travel greater distances and hit targets more effectively. Experts believe this will help India build better long-range missiles for both air and ground defence.

DRDO is also working on the Air Droppable Container (ADC). This system helps the armed forces quickly deliver important supplies to difficult locations.

The container is dropped from aircraft using parachutes and can safely carry food, medicines, ammunition, communication equipment and emergency materials.

This technology is especially useful for soldiers posted in mountains, border areas or places affected by natural disasters. It helps deliver supplies even when roads are blocked or difficult to reach.

The design of the container protects items inside so they do not get damaged when landing.

DRDO is also improving armoured military vehicles for better safety and stronger performance on the battlefield.

The advanced armoured platforms are designed to protect soldiers from bullets, explosions and dangerous environments. These vehicles also have protection against nuclear, biological and chemical threats.

They are being developed with modern sensors, cameras, night-vision systems and advanced weapons. Such technology allows troops to work better during war and difficult military situations.

The aim is to make Indian military vehicles smarter, safer and more effective.

Air defence and future warfare systems

Another important development is the Ultra Light Precision Guided Missile (ULPGM). This lightweight missile is designed to hit enemy targets with high accuracy.

The missile can be launched from helicopters, drones and light combat systems. It is mainly designed to destroy tanks, bunkers and enemy positions.

One of its biggest advantages is that it works with “fire-and-forget” technology. This means once launched, the missile can guide itself toward the target without constant control from soldiers.

Because of its lightweight design and precision, it can help India improve anti-tank warfare and reduce risks for soldiers during combat.

DRDO has also developed the Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORAD). This system is important because it protects India from low-flying threats such as helicopters, drones and aircraft.

Modern wars increasingly involve drone attacks and quick aerial strikes. VSHORAD helps stop these dangers before they cause damage.

The system uses an advanced infrared seeker to detect and track targets quickly. It reacts fast and improves the chances of successfully stopping incoming threats.

Flight testing of VSHORAD has already been completed, and the system may soon become part of the armed forces.

Experts believe this technology will greatly strengthen India’s border security and frontline military operations.

DRDO’s work is important because India wants to reduce dependence on foreign defence equipment. Buying weapons and military systems from abroad can be expensive and may create long-term dependence.

By building its own technology, India gains more control over national security and can improve systems based on its own needs.

The organisation is not only helping in defence but also supporting scientific progress and innovation. Technologies built for military purposes often help in other sectors such as engineering, transportation and emergency systems.

The support provided for the Gaganyaan mission also shows that DRDO’s role goes beyond warfare and defence.
