Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the occasion of Samvidhan Diwas (Constitution Day) by writing a letter to the nation. In his message, he called the Constitution of India a sacred document that has guided the country’s progress for decades. He said every citizen must make sure that their actions help strengthen the Constitution and support the nation’s goals.
Modi said his own journey in public life shows the strength of India’s democratic framework. He explained that the Constitution allowed a person like him, who grew up in a humble and economically challenged family, to serve as the head of the government for more than 24 years. According to him, this is proof that the Constitution gives equal opportunities to everyone, regardless of their background.
In his letter, Modi wrote that it is the responsibility of every Indian to fulfil the dreams of the members of the Constituent Assembly who drafted the Constitution. He said that when citizens work with honesty and a sense of duty, India’s social and economic progress increases many times. He emphasised that understanding and performing one’s duties is essential for the country to advance.
Modi also criticised the Opposition, saying they did not give the Constitution the attention it deserved in the past. He recalled that in 2010, when the Constitution completed 60 years, the event was not celebrated on a national scale. He felt that such a major milestone should have received more importance.
He said that to show respect and gratitude for the Constitution, his government organised the Samvidhan Gaurav Yatra in Gujarat. In that procession, a copy of the Constitution was placed on an elephant, symbolising honour. Modi said he felt privileged to be part of that yatra along with people from different communities.
The prime minister described Constitution Day as a moment of pride for every Indian. He reminded the nation of the important figures who shaped the Constitution—especially Dr Rajendra Prasad, who presided over the Constituent Assembly, and Dr B.R. Ambedkar, who headed the Drafting Committee. Modi said Ambedkar worked with great foresight, keeping in mind the future needs of the country.
He added that when the Constitution completed 75 years, the government organised a special Parliament session and launched various national-scale programmes to celebrate the occasion. These events, he said, witnessed record participation from people across the country. For Modi, this public involvement showed the country’s deep respect for the values of the Constitution.

Modi wrote that this year’s Constitution Day holds even greater importance because 2025 marks several major anniversaries. He mentioned the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first home minister and deputy prime minister, and the anniversary of freedom fighter Birsa Munda. He said both leaders made historic contributions to the nation, and their lives continue to inspire future generations.
The prime minister said that Sardar Patel’s leadership played a crucial role in unifying the country. According to him, Patel’s guidance helped the government take firm decisions, including the move to remove Articles 370 and 35A. Modi said this step ensured that the Constitution is now fully in force in Jammu and Kashmir, giving all constitutional rights to the people there, especially women and marginalised groups. He described this as a major achievement in strengthening equality and justice.
Modi also praised Birsa Munda, saying his life represents courage and commitment toward the welfare of tribal communities. He said Birsa Munda continues to inspire India’s efforts to bring dignity, justice, and empowerment to tribal groups across the nation.
The country is also observing the 150th anniversary of the national song “Vande Mataram” and the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur. Modi said Guru Tegh Bahadur’s sacrifice still shines as an example of courage, compassion, and strength. According to him, remembering such personalities reminds citizens of the importance of duties—a concept highlighted clearly in Article 51A of the Constitution, which lists the Fundamental Duties of citizens.
Modi wrote that Mahatma Gandhi always stressed the importance of performing duties. Gandhi believed that when duties are performed sincerely, rights automatically follow. Modi said this idea remains as relevant as ever, especially when India is moving towards major milestones.
He pointed out that India will complete 100 years of independence in just over two decades. Similarly, the Constitution will be 100 years old in 2049. Modi said every policy decision and every action taken today will shape the future for generations yet to come. He urged citizens to act responsibly so that the country can continue to grow stronger.
The prime minister also reminded people of the importance of voting. He said that since the Constitution gives every adult the right to vote, it becomes the duty of each citizen to use this right in every election. According to him, encouraging young people to vote with pride and a sense of responsibility helps build a stronger and more democratic nation.
In his concluding message, Modi asked citizens to show gratitude for what the country has given them by strengthening the Constitution through their daily actions. He said dedication, sincerity, and commitment to duty are essential for fulfilling the vision of the Constitution’s framers. Modi added that these values will guide India toward becoming a stronger, more united, and more prosperous nation.
