The Chandigarh Police have arrested two men for allegedly snatching a mobile phone from a resident while he was on his way to the mosque in Sector 31. The incident took place on Monday near Sachdeva Electronics, and the accused were caught within a short time. Police have also recovered the stolen mobile phone, the victim’s Aadhaar card, and the motorcycle used in the crime.

According to the police, the arrested men have been identified as Harjot Singh (28), a taxi driver from Narayangarh in Ambala, and Sukhdev Kakkar (33), a call centre employee from Baltana in Zirakpur. Investigators added that both men do not have any past criminal record.

Victim’s complaint and incident details

The complaint was filed by Ijlal Khan, a resident of Industrial Area Phase 1. He told the police that the incident happened when he was on his way to the mosque in Sector 31.

When Khan reached near Sachdeva Electronics, two men approached him on a motorcycle. According to his statement, one of them grabbed him forcefully while the other snatched his mobile phone. The accused then fled from the spot on their bike.

Khan also reported that his Aadhaar card was inside the mobile cover, which made the situation more serious for him. After receiving his complaint, police at the Sector 31 police station registered a case of snatching and began their investigation.

The prompt action by the police helped them track down the suspects quickly. Within a short span of time, Harjot and Sukhdev were arrested. The mobile phone and Aadhaar card were both recovered and handed back to Khan. The motorcycle used in the crime was also seized.

Police investigation and arrests

The Chandigarh Police confirmed that Harjot Singh and Sukhdev Kakkar were arrested for their role in the incident. Harjot works as a taxi driver, while Sukhdev is employed in a call centre. Officials stressed that neither man has any criminal background, which suggests that this could have been their first attempt at such a crime.

The investigation also revealed that the accused may have been looking for easy targets. Snatching crimes usually take place when criminals see a chance to grab valuables quickly and escape before anyone can stop them. In this case, however, the police were quick to respond, and the suspects were caught soon after the incident.

Police have said they are continuing to check whether the two men were involved in any other snatching cases in Chandigarh or nearby areas. At present, no such connection has been found.

The police highlighted that snatching cases often rise in Chandigarh and surrounding towns, but swift action and recovery of items help restore people’s faith in law enforcement.

A common concern in the city

Snatching has been a growing concern for residents of Chandigarh, Mohali, Zirakpur, and Panchkula. Mobile phones, purses, and gold chains are the most common targets. Criminals usually operate in pairs on bikes, making it easier for them to escape quickly.

Authorities have been advising people to stay alert while using mobile phones in public spaces or walking alone on relatively quieter roads. The Chandigarh Police have also been increasing patrolling in sensitive areas and near markets to reduce such incidents.

The case of Ijlal Khan highlights the risks ordinary people face when targeted by sudden attacks. Though he lost his phone and Aadhaar card temporarily, the quick action of the police ensured that the items were recovered, and the accused were caught.

Community reaction

Local residents expressed relief that the accused were caught promptly. Many pointed out that such incidents create fear among people, especially when they are out during early morning or late-night hours. The recovery of the phone and Aadhaar card also reassured the victim, as losing identification documents can cause long-term issues.

Police officials said that the arrest of the two men sends a strong message to others who may be planning similar crimes. They also promised that more efforts will be made to curb snatching in Chandigarh’s busy and residential areas.

While Harjot Singh and Sukhdev Kakkar are now in police custody, the case is still under investigation. Further details will emerge once the police complete their questioning and background checks.

For now, the swift recovery of the stolen items and the arrest of the suspects stand as an example of effective policing. Residents are being urged to report such crimes immediately, as quick reporting can make it easier to track down offenders.

This incident highlights the importance of vigilance, both by the public and the authorities, in keeping Chandigarh safe from street crimes like snatching.
