Himachal Pradesh opens select rooms in state guest houses for public online booking

The Himachal Pradesh government has decided to allow the general public to book selected rooms online in some of its state-run guest houses and official residences. The move is expected to make accommodation easier for travellers while improving the use of available rooms.

According to officials, 20 per cent of rooms in Himachal Bhawan and Himachal Sadan in Delhi, Himachal Bhawan in Chandigarh, and Willy’s Park Circuit House in Shimla have now been opened for public booking through an online system.

The General Administration Department (GAD) has marked 24 rooms under its control at these locations as “commercial” rooms. This means ordinary citizens can now reserve them directly instead of depending on official recommendations or departmental approvals.

Officials said bookings can be made online up to seven days in advance. Earlier, room reservations at many such government properties were mainly processed through the General Administration Department.

The new system is being seen as a step towards transparency, better occupancy, and easier public access.

Rooms now available for public booking

Government Bhawans, Sadans, and circuit houses are usually meant for official guests, government officers, and visiting dignitaries. In many states, these facilities are also used by ministers, MLAs, and officers during travel.

However, many rooms often remain vacant when not required for official use. By opening a portion of these rooms to the public, the government hopes to make better use of public assets.

Officials said the newly opened rooms can now be booked online in advance. This is likely to help travellers visiting Delhi, Chandigarh, or Shimla who are looking for secure and reasonably managed accommodation.

A GAD official said the decision was taken to improve occupancy rates and stop proxy bookings. Proxy bookings usually happen when rooms are reserved through unofficial channels or in the name of people who do not actually use them.

Online booking is expected to reduce such misuse and make the process more transparent.

Locations included in the new system

The public booking plan covers several important Himachal Pradesh properties located in major cities. These include:

  • Himachal Bhawan, New Delhi

  • Himachal Sadan, New Delhi

  • Himachal Bhawan, Chandigarh

  • Willy’s Park Circuit House, Shimla

These places are popular because they are located in key administrative and travel centres. Delhi and Chandigarh attract people for official work, medical visits, education, and tourism. Shimla remains one of the most visited hill cities in North India.

Officials shared details of room availability under the GAD and Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC).

At Himachal Bhawan in New Delhi, there are 50 rooms in total. Of these, 29 are under the control of the General Administration Department, while the remaining rooms are managed by HPTDC.

All 19 rooms in Himachal Sadan, Delhi, are under GAD control.

In Himachal Bhawan, Chandigarh, 29 rooms are under GAD, while 20 are with HPTDC.

At Willy’s Park Circuit House in Shimla, 49 rooms are controlled by GAD and 30 by HPTDC.

From these room stocks, 24 rooms have been notified as commercial and opened for public booking.

Why this decision matters

This decision is important because it opens government accommodation to ordinary people in a more organised way. Many travellers often struggle to find safe and affordable rooms in cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, and Shimla, especially during busy seasons.

Government guest houses are usually known for secure premises, clean surroundings, and good locations. Allowing limited public access can benefit visitors while generating additional revenue for maintenance.

The move also reflects changing expectations around public services. Citizens increasingly expect digital systems, clear booking rules, and equal access. Online reservations make the process faster and reduce dependency on personal contacts or manual approvals.

It may also help Himachal Pradesh better manage public property that otherwise remains underused during non-peak official periods.

Possible benefits for travellers

For travellers, the biggest benefit is convenience. Instead of contacting offices or waiting for approval, people can check room availability online and book directly.

Families travelling for treatment, exams, interviews, or tourism may especially benefit. Many people from Himachal Pradesh frequently visit Delhi and Chandigarh for official work, hospital appointments, and education-related needs.

Shimla’s Willy’s Park Circuit House may also attract visitors who want to stay at a government-managed property in a prime hill station.

If pricing remains reasonable, these rooms could become a useful option for middle-class travellers.

Need for smooth implementation

While the decision has been welcomed, its success will depend on how well the system is managed. Key areas include:

  • Easy-to-use booking website

  • Clear room tariffs

  • Fair cancellation policies

  • Cleanliness and maintenance

  • Priority rules during official visits

  • Customer support for users

Since these properties are also used for government purposes, officials may need a clear balance between public bookings and official requirements.

There may also be high demand during tourist seasons, holidays, or major events. Transparent rules will be important to avoid confusion.

A modern use of public infrastructure

Many states are now trying to modernise old government systems through digitisation and public access. Himachal Pradesh’s latest decision fits into that trend. Instead of keeping all rooms reserved only for official channels, the government is allowing controlled public use through an online platform.

This approach can improve transparency, reduce waste, and bring extra income for upkeep of these buildings.

It also sends a message that public assets should be used efficiently and benefit more people when possible.

What happens next

As bookings begin, public response will determine whether the model expands in future. If the system works smoothly, more rooms or more state properties could be opened later.

For now, travellers have a new option. A part of Himachal Pradesh’s state guest house network in Delhi, Chandigarh, and Shimla is now available for direct online booking, making travel easier for ordinary citizens and improving the use of government accommodation.
