Breakthrough: PGI Doctors develop affordable Liver Cancer medicine

A groundbreaking medicine for liver cancer, developed by nuclear medicine doctors at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, is revolutionizing treatment for patients. This medicine, costing only ₹5,000, stands in stark contrast to the expensive ₹10 lakh alternative available elsewhere.

Innovative treatment approach

During a conference on “Radiopharmaceuticals: Chemistry to precision medicine” at PGIMER, Dr. Jaya Shukla unveiled a cost-effective treatment for liver cancer, offering a ray of hope for many. The medicine involves tiny particles injected into patients, aiding in targeted treatment.

Dr. Shukla explained that before administering the full treatment, patients receive a small dose to determine the appropriate amount required. This precautionary measure aims to minimize side effects, particularly the risk of the particles spreading to other organs, such as the lungs and stomach, which could lead to ulcers.

The particles developed by Dr. Shukla can be labeled for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Unlike existing options in the market, which are expensive and unsuitable for diagnosis due to their large size, Dr. Shukla's particles offer a more precise imaging capability.

Targeted delivery mechanism

Using a catheter inserted into the hepatic artery, doctors can precisely target the feeding artery of the tumor. By tracking the increased blood supply to the tumor, they can deposit the molecules directly at the tumor site, enhancing the effectiveness of the treatment.

Despite the affordable cost of the medicine, it has yielded promising results, with many patients surviving for over five years and experiencing an improved quality of life. Dr. Shukla's innovative approach has treated 60 patients so far, showcasing the potential to transform the landscape of liver cancer treatment.

In addition to its affordability, the treatment involves materials costing around ₹50,000. While typically administered as a single dose, it can be repeated if necessary, offering flexibility and personalized care to patients.

Dr. Shukla's groundbreaking medicine not only offers hope to patients battling liver cancer but also underscores the potential for affordable and effective treatments to address critical medical needs.
