IIT Delhi has achieved its best-ever performance in the QS World University Rankings 2027 by securing the 118th position globally. This is a proud moment not only for the institute but also for India, as it is the highest rank ever achieved by an Indian institution in the history of the QS rankings.
The latest rankings were announced on June 18, and IIT Delhi improved its position from 123rd place last year to 118th this year. The improvement shows the institute’s growing reputation in education, research, and innovation at the international level.
The QS World University Rankings are among the most respected university rankings in the world. They measure institutions based on factors like academic reputation, employer reputation, research quality, faculty strength, and international engagement.
For IIT Delhi, this jump in rankings reflects years of effort in improving teaching quality, research work, and student opportunities.
One of the biggest reasons behind IIT Delhi’s improved ranking is its better performance in employer reputation. This category shows how highly companies and recruiters value graduates from the institute.
IIT Delhi climbed 11 places in employer reputation and now holds the 39th rank in the world in this category. This means companies across the world trust the quality of students graduating from the institute.
Another major improvement came in employment outcomes, where IIT Delhi jumped by 60 positions. This indicator measures how successful graduates are in finding jobs and building careers after completing their studies.
This shows that students from IIT Delhi are doing well in the job market, both in India and abroad.
The institute also improved in citations per faculty by 26 positions. This is an important indicator because it reflects the quality and impact of research being produced by the university.
Higher citations mean that research papers written by IIT Delhi professors and researchers are being widely read and used by scholars across the world.
Experts say this rise in research quality is a major reason behind the improved ranking.
The institute has also worked on updating its curriculum, building better infrastructure, and increasing international collaborations.
Somnath Baidya Roy, Dean of Planning and Head of the Ranking Cell at IIT Delhi, said the institute is focused on providing world-class and affordable education.
He said rankings are not the main goal, but a result of doing the right work.
According to him, the institute’s new curriculum, stronger infrastructure, and growing international partnerships will help it improve even further in the future.

Among non-IIT institutions, Delhi University reached the 322nd spot. Jamia Millia Islamia improved to 686th place.
BITS Pilani was ranked 575th, while VIT secured the 597th position.
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan praised the performance of Indian universities. He said India’s strong showing in the rankings reflects the success of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
He pointed out that 52 Indian universities from 19 states and Union Territories made it to the rankings, and more than half of them improved their positions.
He said this proves that India is becoming a global centre for knowledge, research, and innovation.
Earlier this year, IIT Delhi had also performed strongly in the QS World University Rankings by Subject.
In the engineering and technology category, the institute was ranked 36th globally and remained India’s top institution.
Subjects like Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, and Civil Engineering all entered the global top 50.
This shows that IIT Delhi continues to lead in technical education and research.
On the global stage, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) retained the number one spot. Stanford University and Imperial College London shared the second rank, while the University of Oxford secured the third position.
For India, IIT Delhi’s achievement is an important milestone. It shows that Indian institutions are improving and becoming more competitive globally.
Students, teachers, and alumni of IIT Delhi have welcomed the news with pride. Many believe this ranking will attract more international students, researchers, and partnerships in the coming years.
The achievement is also expected to inspire other Indian universities to focus more on research, innovation, and quality education.
With this success, IIT Delhi has once again proved why it remains one of India’s most respected educational institutions and a symbol of academic excellence on the world stage.
