A disagreement has emerged within Uttar Pradesh's power department after State Energy Minister AK Sharma questioned officials over a recent increase in electricity charges. The minister has reportedly written a strong letter to Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) Chairperson Dr Ashish Kumar Goel, asking why decisions related to electricity rates were taken without informing him.
The issue comes at a time when Uttar Pradesh is already facing criticism over power cuts and electricity supply problems during the summer season. Rising temperatures have increased electricity demand across the state, leading to pressure on the power system and complaints from consumers.
In his letter, Sharma expressed concern over the increase in electricity charges and the introduction of a 10 percent Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment Surcharge (FPPAS) for June 2026. He questioned why such an important decision was made without consulting the state's Energy Minister.
According to reports, Sharma said he learned about decisions taken by his own department through television news channels and media reports. He stated that such a situation was unacceptable and raised questions about communication within the department.
The minister also asked why the UPPCL chairperson had not kept him informed about important developments. He reportedly questioned the functioning of the department and sought explanations regarding administrative decisions that had recently been taken.
The letter has attracted significant attention because it highlights differences between the political leadership and the administrative officials responsible for managing the state's power sector.

In his communication, AK Sharma reportedly said that the electricity rate increase could negatively affect the image of the government among the public. He expressed concern that consumers would blame the government for higher electricity bills, especially at a time when many people are already facing difficulties due to heat-related power shortages.
The minister questioned why the surcharge was imposed without taking him into confidence. He said that major policy decisions affecting millions of consumers should involve proper consultation and discussion.
The Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment Surcharge is a charge that electricity companies sometimes add to consumer bills to recover additional costs incurred in purchasing fuel or electricity. While such charges are allowed under regulatory mechanisms, Sharma questioned the process through which the decision was implemented.
Reports suggest that Sharma also expressed dissatisfaction regarding other administrative matters. He reportedly asked why several experienced officials had been removed from key positions within the power department.
The minister said that learning about departmental decisions through media reports was not acceptable. According to him, such an approach creates confusion and affects the smooth functioning of government departments.
His letter described the situation as irresponsible and not in the public interest. The remarks indicate growing concerns within the department regarding communication and decision-making processes.
The development has become a major political issue because electricity supply and power tariffs directly affect millions of households, businesses and industries across Uttar Pradesh.

According to the minister, electricity demand in the state has risen sharply because of the intense summer heat. On the night of June 8 and June 9, the state's peak electricity demand reached 31,678 megawatts.
He stated that this record was surpassed again on June 10, when electricity demand increased further to 31,894 megawatts. According to Sharma, this was the highest electricity demand ever recorded in Uttar Pradesh.
The minister said the government has made major investments in electricity generation and infrastructure over the past several years. New power projects, upgraded transmission systems and stronger distribution networks have helped improve the state's ability to meet rising demand.
However, he acknowledged that challenges remain. Extreme weather conditions, including heatwaves, storms and hailstorms, have affected electricity supply in some areas.
The minister said that despite these difficulties, officials are working continuously to ensure that consumers receive reliable electricity services. He appealed to residents to remain patient and cooperate with authorities whenever disruptions occur.
Power supply has become an important public issue in Uttar Pradesh this year. Opposition parties, including the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), have criticised the government over power outages and electricity-related problems.
With state assembly elections scheduled next year, electricity supply is expected to remain a major political topic. Opposition leaders have indicated that they will continue raising concerns related to power shortages and consumer issues.
At the same time, the government has highlighted improvements in electricity generation and distribution, arguing that demand has reached unprecedented levels because of economic growth and increasing use of electrical appliances.
The latest dispute between the Energy Minister and the UPPCL chairperson has added another dimension to the ongoing debate about power management in Uttar Pradesh.
As the state continues to face record electricity demand during the summer months, attention will remain focused on how the government addresses consumer concerns, maintains power supply and manages electricity pricing decisions.
The matter is expected to remain under discussion as officials review the concerns raised by the minister and examine the circumstances surrounding the recent electricity surcharge and tariff-related decisions.
