REMEDIES TO HELP DURING THE HEATWAVE: When the summer hits the 40s in temperature, water alone isn’t enough to stay cool.
“So… that energy drink is the way to go right? Or the ice-cold sugary soda?"
Yeah, definitely – if you want your energy to crash like an hour later.
But if you actually want to stay at your peak even with the sun over your head (literally), you’re going to need some desi nani maa ke nuskhe.
Some of these remedies are rooted in traditional wisdom and backed by simple science that works with your body’s internal climate, not against it.

  1. The Super-Cooling Drinks & Herbs
    1. Sattu: Afternoon dizziness goes bye-bye
India’s original protein shake made from roasted gram flour. It releases energy slowly, which can help prevent that afternoon slump.
    2. Chaas/Lassi: AC for your stomach
Packed with natural electrolytes and probiotics. This naturally cools the stomach and is amazing for post-lunch sleepiness.
    3. Gond Katira (Tragacanth Gum): Internal body ice-pack
A natural jelly-like coolant. Soak a spoon overnight and add it to milk or water to cool off. Traditionally, Gond Katira has been used for its cooling effects in the extreme heat.
    4. Bel Sharbat (Wood Apple): Your armor
Often called a summer gut shield. It forms a cooling layer in your stomach, curing summer bloating and loss of appetite.
    5. Aam Panna (Raw Mango): That sunstroke can bite it
Rich in vitamin C and minerals. It replaces the exact salt and potassium you lose through sweat, helping prevent a sunstroke.
    6. Dhaniya (Coriander) Water: Burning elements not allowed
Soak whole coriander seeds overnight and drink the water in the morning—it's believed to help the body release heat and ease stomach discomfort. Basically, it flushes out metabolic heat and stops stomach burning.
  2. Managing Your Internal Chemistry
    1. Balance Your Pitta: Make that see-saw a straight line
In Ayurveda, summer is associated with an increase in ‘Pitta’, which is believed to show up as irritability, skin flare-ups, and general heat sensitivity. Balance it by eating sweet, bitter, and juicy foods (cucumbers, melons, mint, etc.) instead of sour or salty items.
    2. Keep Your Agni Burning: Keep that fire in you burning
Gulping ice-cold water kills your digestive fire (Agni). That’s why many people avoid extremely cold water—opting for room temperature or matka water is the move.
    3. Raw Onion Salad: Ignore that breath coz this is a lifesaver.
Eat raw red onions with lunch. Onions contain quercetin, a compound often linked with helping the body cope with heat stress; it acts as a shield against hot summer winds (loo). Squeeze lemon juice over them to assist digestion.
    4. The Foot-Oil Ritual: Excuse for a good pampering sesh
Before bed, wash your feet and massage the soles with coconut or almond oil. This is believed to help the body relax and promote deeper sleep by grounding excess heat.
  3. What NOT to Do (The Energy Drainers)
    1. Ice Cream & Sugar:  Not every good thing is good for us
They feel cold and satisfying and so yummy, but the heavy fat and refined sugar force your body to work overtime to digest them, creating a hidden internal heat spike.
    2. Super Cold Stuff: It feels good, but is it…?
Freezing drinks constrict your blood vessels and completely stall your digestion, making you feel sluggish.
    3. Fried Foods: No fires
Deep-fried snacks are incredibly high in oil, which aggravates Pitta and makes your metabolic system sluggish in the heat.
    4. Leftovers: Not even day-old-pizza
Food cooked the day before builds up internal toxins (ama) and heat. Stick to fresh, light meals like dal and rice or curd-rice.
    5. AC Misuse: Not all comfort is long-term
Sitting in extreme AC and immediately stepping out into 42°C weather shocks your body’s internal thermostat, destroying your energy levels. Keep your AC at a moderate 24–26°C.

Summer doesn’t really need fancy hacks. Most of what works has already been sitting in Indian kitchens for generations—we just forget to look there until the heat forces us to remember.
