The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated senior party leader Tarun Chugh for the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh. With the BJP holding strong numbers in the state assembly, Chugh’s election to the Upper House is almost certain.
The announcement came as the BJP released its list of 11 candidates for the upcoming biennial Rajya Sabha elections. The list attracted attention because it did not include the names of former Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar or Union Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu, both of whom had been discussed in political circles as possible candidates.
Tarun Chugh, a 55-year-old leader from Amritsar, Punjab, currently serves as the BJP’s national general secretary. Over the years, he has become one of the party’s most prominent faces from Punjab and has held several important organisational responsibilities at the national level.
His nomination is being viewed as a reward for his long service to the party and his role in strengthening the BJP’s organisation across different parts of the country.
The Rajya Sabha, also known as the Upper House of Parliament, plays an important role in India’s legislative process. Members are elected by state legislators, and parties nominate candidates based on their political strength in the respective states.
In Madhya Pradesh, the BJP is expected to comfortably secure two of the three seats that are up for election. As a result, political observers believe Chugh’s victory is largely assured.
The decision has also sparked discussions about the BJP’s political strategy in Punjab, where the party is trying to strengthen its organisation ahead of future elections.
Tarun Chugh’s political journey began many years ago through the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student organisation associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Like many BJP leaders, he started his political career at the grassroots level and gradually rose through the ranks of the organisation.
During his early years in politics, Chugh worked as a party worker in Punjab and later became active in organisational activities in Amritsar. He served as district secretary and subsequently became a member of the BJP’s state executive committee.
Over time, his responsibilities expanded beyond Punjab. His organisational skills and commitment earned him important assignments within the party structure.
In recent years, Chugh has held several key responsibilities at the national level. He has been in charge of party affairs in Jammu and Kashmir, Telangana and Ladakh. He has also worked closely with the BJP’s Scheduled Caste Morcha and played a role in various election campaigns across the country.
Political observers often describe him as a trusted member of the BJP leadership. He is widely regarded as being close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
After the announcement of his nomination, Chugh thanked the party leadership for placing confidence in him. He said that the opportunity was both an honour and a major responsibility.
Speaking about his political journey, Chugh noted that he had started as a booth-level worker and promised to continue serving the party with sincerity and dedication.
His statement reflected the BJP’s emphasis on promoting leaders who have spent years working within the organisation rather than entering politics through high-profile positions.

Chugh’s nomination is significant not only for him personally but also for the BJP’s internal politics in Punjab.
The party has been undergoing organisational changes in the state after appointing Kewal Singh Dhillon as the new Punjab BJP president. Dhillon, who previously belonged to the Congress party and joined the BJP in 2022, became the first Jat Sikh leader to head the BJP’s Punjab unit.
His appointment generated mixed reactions within sections of the party. Some BJP workers and leaders welcomed the move, while others expressed concerns about giving important positions to leaders who joined from rival political parties.
Against this backdrop, Chugh’s nomination is being viewed as an attempt by the BJP leadership to maintain balance between long-serving party workers and newer leaders who have joined from other political organisations.
Political insiders believe the leadership wants to send a message that dedicated party workers continue to have opportunities for growth and recognition within the organisation.
The absence of Sunil Jakhar’s name from the candidate list has also attracted attention. There had been speculation that Jakhar might be nominated to the Rajya Sabha after stepping aside from the state leadership role. However, the BJP chose not to field him in the current round of elections.
Similarly, Ravneet Singh Bittu’s exclusion has generated discussion. Bittu, who currently serves as a Union Minister of State, recently expressed interest in contesting the Punjab Assembly elections in 2027. His focus appears to be shifting toward state politics after spending nearly two decades in Parliament.
The Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for June 18 will take place in several states, including Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur.
For Tarun Chugh, the nomination marks another important milestone in a political career that began at the grassroots level and gradually reached the national stage. His expected entry into the Rajya Sabha will strengthen Punjab’s representation in Parliament while also highlighting the BJP’s effort to reward experienced organisational leaders.
As the elections approach, Chugh’s nomination is likely to remain an important talking point within Punjab politics, especially as the BJP continues to prepare for future electoral battles in the state.
