Haryana has made strong progress in Census 2027 work, with many districts starting the first phase of the survey in almost all areas. State officials said the houselisting and housing census process is moving quickly, and some districts have already reached full commencement of the work. The Haryana government has asked all officials to treat the Census exercise as a top priority because it plays an important role in planning welfare schemes, development projects and government services.
The update was shared during an online review meeting led by Haryana Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi. Senior officials, including divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, municipal commissioners, district education officers and other officers, joined the meeting to review progress and preparations. Officials discussed how quickly work is being completed and what steps are needed to finish the process on time.
The Census is a nationwide activity that collects detailed information about people, homes and living conditions. Governments use this information to make policies, distribute resources and improve public services. Haryana officials said smooth and timely completion of Census work is important because the data collected affects future planning across sectors such as education, health, housing and welfare.
According to Haryana officials, the first phase of Census 2027, known as the houselisting and housing census, has already started in most places. Lalit Jain, Director of Census Operations in Haryana, said more than 97 per cent of houselisting blocks across the state have already begun work. This means officials have started collecting details from homes in most areas.
Several districts have reportedly achieved complete commencement of the exercise. These include Yamuna Nagar, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Karnal, Fatehabad, Hansi, Charkhi Dadri and Faridabad. Officials said these districts have successfully started Census work in all planned areas.
Among them, Charkhi Dadri showed particularly fast progress. Officials said over 32 per cent of the assigned work had already been completed there. Other districts, including Fatehabad, Hansi, Jind and Mahendragarh, also reported good progress in completing field activities.
In urban areas, Panipat Municipal Corporation reportedly recorded the highest completion rate among municipal corporations. Rohtak and Faridabad followed closely behind in terms of progress.
Officials believe that early completion in several districts shows better coordination between departments and stronger preparation before the exercise started. Haryana has been encouraging officers to ensure the process continues without delays.
Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi told officers during the meeting that Census work should be carried out with dedication, responsibility and efficiency. He stressed that every official assigned to the task must work seriously because the Census forms the foundation of important government decisions.
He also issued a warning to employees. According to officials, any government employee who ignores Census duty or fails to cooperate properly may face strict disciplinary action. The administration wants to avoid delays because Census operations involve large numbers of field staff and require proper coordination.
The Haryana government believes that accurate information collected during the Census helps improve decision-making. Data gathered during the exercise can help authorities understand population growth, housing conditions, education levels and access to facilities in both cities and villages.

During the review meeting, Additional Chief Secretary Sumita Misra highlighted the importance of cooperation at the local level. She said municipal committees, village sarpanches, panches and resident welfare associations should actively support Census teams to ensure the work finishes smoothly and on time.
She also suggested involving gram sabhas more actively in the process so that people understand why Census work matters. Awareness campaigns and information activities are being encouraged to help residents cooperate with officials during surveys.
To improve fieldwork, district administrations were advised to adjust office timings and employee schedules where necessary. Since many government staff members are involved in field surveys, authorities want to make sure the work can be completed without affecting deadlines.
Officials also reviewed preparations for another major exercise called the Special Intensive Revision, which is scheduled to begin on June 15, 2026. During discussions, officers talked about avoiding overlap between Census work and electoral revision work, especially because booth-level officers and field staff are involved in both tasks.
Training schedules are also being carefully planned so employees can manage their responsibilities without confusion or delays. Officials said better planning will reduce pressure on staff and improve efficiency.
Earlier this year, on April 16, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini officially launched the Census 2027 process in the state. At the time, he described the Census as much more than a simple counting exercise. He said it forms the base for government policies, welfare schemes and long-term development planning.
Saini had also personally completed self-enumeration online by filling out the required form. The state had allowed citizens to use self-enumeration facilities between April 16 and April 30 so residents could enter information digitally before field surveys began.
The first phase of Census work in Haryana officially started on May 1 and will continue until May 30, 2026. During this period, officials are carrying out house listing and housing-related surveys across cities, towns and villages.
This Census is important for Haryana because it will be the sixth Census conducted in the state since Haryana was formed in 1966. Officials believe the information collected this time will play a major role in shaping future welfare plans, development projects and public services for people across the state.
With many districts already showing strong progress, the Haryana government says it remains focused on completing Census 2027 work efficiently and on schedule while ensuring accurate data collection from every household.
