The Government of India has approved three major railway projects worth about Rs 23,437 crore. This decision was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), which is chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The aim of these projects is to improve railway connectivity, reduce congestion, and make travel easier for people across different states.
These railway projects include building third and fourth railway lines on three important routes. These routes are Nagda to Mathura, Guntakal to Wadi, and Burhwal to Sitapur. These sections are already very busy, and the addition of extra lines will help trains run more smoothly and on time.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that these routes are among the most crowded in the country. By adding more lines, the pressure on the existing tracks will reduce. This will improve the overall performance of Indian Railways and make train services more reliable.
The government has also said that these projects are part of the Pradhan Mantri Gati Shakti National Master Plan. This plan focuses on improving transport and logistics across the country. It aims to connect different modes of transport, such as railways, roads, and ports, to make movement faster and more efficient.
One of the main benefits of these projects is better connectivity for people. The new railway lines will cover 19 districts across six states. These states include Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana.
The projects will add about 901 kilometres to the existing railway network. This expansion will help around 8.3 million people living in about 4,161 villages. With better rail services, people in these areas will find it easier to travel for work, education, and other needs.
The new lines will also reduce delays caused by overcrowded tracks. At present, many trains are forced to wait because there is not enough space on the tracks. With more lines available, trains can move more freely, leading to faster and smoother journeys.

The new lines will make it easier for people to visit places like the Mahakaleshwar Temple, Ranthambore National Park, Kuno National Park, Keoladeo National Park, Mathura, Vrindavan, and Naimisharanya.
These places attract a large number of visitors every year. Better train connectivity will encourage more tourists to visit, which can help local businesses grow. Hotels, shops, and transport services in these areas may see increased activity.
In addition to tourism, the projects will also support the transportation of goods. These railway routes are important for carrying materials like coal, cement, food grains, petroleum products, steel, iron ore, containers, and fertilisers.
With increased capacity, the railways will be able to handle an extra 60 million tons of freight every year. This will make it easier to move goods across the country and support industries that depend on railway transport.
The government has also highlighted the environmental benefits of these projects. By improving railway efficiency, there will be less need for road transport, which uses more fuel. It is estimated that these projects will reduce oil imports by about 370 million litres.
In addition, carbon emissions are expected to decrease by 1.85 billion kilograms. This is equal to the environmental benefit of planting around 70 million trees. These changes will help India move towards cleaner and more sustainable transport.
