Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the first phase of the Noida International Airport in Jewar, marking a major milestone in India’s aviation sector. The new airport is set to become the second international airport serving the Delhi-NCR region, alongside the Indira Gandhi International Airport.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by key leaders, including Yogi Adityanath, Anandiben Patel, and Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu. The event saw a festive atmosphere, with cultural performances and large public participation.
This ambitious project is expected to transform air travel in northern India by reducing congestion, improving connectivity, and boosting economic growth.
The Noida International Airport is one of the largest greenfield airport projects in India. The first phase has been developed at a cost of around ₹11,200 crore under a public–private partnership model. Out of this, a significant portion was invested by the concessionaire, while the state government contributed towards land acquisition.
Once fully developed, the airport will have the capacity to handle up to 70 million passengers per year. In its initial phase, it will manage around 12 million passengers annually. This will significantly reduce the burden on the already busy Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.
The airport features a 3,900-meter-long runway, which is capable of handling large, wide-body aircraft. It is also equipped with advanced navigation systems, including an Instrument Landing System (ILS) and modern lighting, allowing operations in all weather conditions and at any time of the day.
One of the key highlights of the project is its cargo handling capability. The airport’s cargo terminal will initially handle around 2.5 lakh metric tonnes annually, with plans to expand this to 18 lakh metric tonnes in the future. This is expected to strengthen trade and logistics in the region.
The airport has also been designed as a multi-modal transport hub. It will be connected by roads, railways, metro services, and regional transit systems. This integration will reduce travel time for passengers and make the airport easily accessible from different parts of Delhi-NCR and nearby states.

Apart from its technical features, the Noida International Airport has been designed with a strong focus on passenger comfort and cultural identity. The terminal design takes inspiration from Indian heritage, including elements from the ghats of Varanasi and Haridwar, as well as traditional haveli-style architecture.
The use of local materials, artwork, and decorative lattice screens adds a unique touch to the airport, making it not just a transport hub but also a reflection of India’s culture.
Passengers can expect modern facilities such as spacious waiting lounges, premium lounges for business and first-class travellers, duty-free shopping areas, and a wide range of food and beverage options. These features aim to provide a comfortable and world-class travel experience.
The development of this airport is also expected to boost economic activity in the region. It will create job opportunities, support local businesses, and attract investments. Areas around Jewar are likely to see rapid development, including infrastructure projects, housing, and commercial spaces.
With this new airport, Uttar Pradesh is set to become the first state in India to have five international airports. This will further strengthen its position as a key hub for travel and trade in the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the importance of the project in improving connectivity and supporting economic growth. He emphasised that such infrastructure developments play a crucial role in building a stronger and more connected India.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also described the project as a major achievement for the state, calling it a step towards a “New Uttar Pradesh” that is focused on development and progress.
