The Indian Navy launched a search and rescue mission after receiving a distress call from the Iranian warship IRIS Dena, which was reportedly hit by a torpedo fired by a United States submarine. The incident took place in international waters near the coast of Sri Lanka and has added further tension to the already serious conflict in the Middle East involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
According to the Indian Navy, the distress message was received in the early hours of March 4 at the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Colombo. The alert was shared by the Sri Lankan Navy after the Iranian vessel encountered a serious emergency while operating about 20 nautical miles west of Galle, a coastal city in southern Sri Lanka.
After receiving the information, the Indian Navy immediately began search and rescue operations. Officials said India responded quickly as part of humanitarian efforts to assist sailors who might have been stranded or injured after the attack.
The Indian Navy first sent a long-range maritime patrol aircraft to the area to support the search operation. The aircraft was launched around 10:00 in the morning on March 4 to help locate survivors and gather information about the situation at sea.
Another aircraft was also kept ready with air-droppable life rafts so that emergency rescue equipment could be delivered quickly if survivors were found in the water. These preparations were made to ensure that any sailors who had abandoned the damaged ship could receive immediate assistance.

The Navy also deployed INS Tarangini, which happened to be operating nearby. The vessel was sent to the area to assist in the rescue efforts and reached the search zone later in the afternoon, around 4:00 pm. By the time the ship arrived, search operations had already begun by the Sri Lankan Navy and other local agencies.
Later, another Indian Navy vessel, INS Ikshak, was also deployed to assist in the operation. The ship has remained in the area to continue searching for missing sailors and provide humanitarian support to those who may still be stranded at sea.
Indian Navy officials said the operation is being carried out as a humanitarian mission to help shipwrecked personnel. The Navy is working closely with Sri Lankan authorities and coordinating with their naval forces to expand the search area and improve the chances of finding survivors.
Search and rescue missions at sea are often complex and challenging because of weather conditions, strong ocean currents, and the vast area that must be covered. Aircraft and ships are used together to scan the water, locate debris, and search for people who may be drifting or trapped.
The Iranian warship IRIS Dena had recently taken part in the MILAN naval exercise held in Visakhapatnam, India. The exercise is a large multinational naval event where several countries participate in joint training activities and maritime cooperation programs.
According to reports, the Iranian frigate was returning from the exercise when it was attacked in international waters near Sri Lanka. The vessel was reportedly struck by a torpedo fired from a United States submarine, which caused severe damage and eventually led to the ship sinking.
Authorities in Sri Lanka said that more than 80 bodies of Iranian sailors have already been recovered from the sea following the incident. Rescue teams are still searching for other missing personnel who may have survived the attack.
The incident has caused strong reactions from Iran. Iranian officials have accused the United States Navy of carrying out an attack in international waters and have described the action as a serious violation.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi strongly criticized the attack and warned that the United States would regret setting such a dangerous precedent. Iranian leaders have also said that the country will respond to the attack.
The sinking of the Iranian warship comes at a time when tensions in the Middle East are already extremely high. Iran has been engaged in military confrontation with the United States and Israel, and several attacks have taken place across the region in recent days.
Reports suggest that Iran has already launched strikes targeting United States military bases in the region. According to available information, at least four American servicemen have been killed in these attacks.
Security experts believe that the situation could become even more dangerous if both sides continue to respond with military force. The risk of escalation remains high, especially as naval forces from several countries are currently operating in nearby waters.
Despite the rising tensions, India has continued to focus on humanitarian assistance and safety at sea. The Indian Navy’s decision to respond quickly to the distress call reflects its role in supporting maritime safety and helping sailors in emergency situations, regardless of nationality.
Officials have said that India will continue to assist in the ongoing rescue efforts while working closely with Sri Lankan authorities. The search operation is expected to continue until all possible survivors are found or accounted for.
As the crisis in the region unfolds, the incident involving IRIS Dena highlights how quickly the conflict can affect countries beyond the immediate war zone. Maritime routes in the Indian Ocean are vital for global trade and security, and any conflict in these waters raises serious international concerns.
